POTATO PANCAKE SUPPER: Transfiguration of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church is sponsoring a Potato Pancake Supper on Friday, March 19th in the Church
Hall. Serving will be from 4:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M with take-outs available. Dinner includes “made from scratch” potato pancakes, choice of homemade soup, veggies, dessert, and beverage. The cost is $6.00. Reservations are not necessary. However, if you would like take-outs, you may call to reserve your pancakes and give an approximate pick up time. LENTEN MISSION: SS Cyril and Methodious, U.C.C. in Berwick is presenting a Lenten Mission on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, March 21st, 22nd, and 23rd at 6:30 p.m. The speaker will be Bishop Nicholas Samra, a former Auxiliary Bishop of the Melkite Byzantine Catholic Church of America. He has authored many articles on Christian leadership, ecumenism, catecheses, and stewardship. He has published a multi-volume history of the Melkite church. He is a dynamic speaker and often gives retreats, missions, and formative weekends to clergy and laity. You are welcome to attend.

We are asking all of our good bakers for their help in providing the dessert table. This can be cake, cupcakes, and cookies, Jell-O, pudding or any other dessert you wish to have served. The ladies from the Women’s Society will provide the food menu. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

THE GREAT FAST BEGINS MONDAY
Monday, February 15, 2010 marks the beginning of The Great Fast (Lent). The Great Forty-day Fast is a special time when we intensify our prayers and spiritual life, and make personal sacrifices through fasting, self-denial, and almsgiving (acts of charity toward others). Only through proper preparation, serious effort, and the forgiveness of our sins, can we hope to grow spiritually and properly prepare for our Lord’s Passion, Death, and Resurrection. The first day of The Great Fast and Good Friday are days of strict abstinence for Ukrainian Greek Catholics – we are not permitted to eat any meat or dairy products all day long, and we should try to limit our consumption of food. All Fridays during The Great Fast are days of mandatory abstinence from all meat products. Wednesdays are also suggested as days of voluntary abstinence from meat products. Our fasting regulations are optional only for persons older than 59 and younger than 7. Everyone else is obliged to follow the rules of abstinence of our Church.
The week days of the Great Fast are aliturgical whereas no Divine Liturgy should be celebrated except for the Feast of the Annunciation. On Wednesday and Friday of the Great Fast, The Liturgy of Presanctified gifts is to be celebrated.
The Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great is to be celebrated for Sunday Liturgies during this time.
During Holy Week the Liturgy of the Presanctified gifts is to be celebrated Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. There is no Divine Liturgy celebrated on Good Friday or Holy Saturday. On Holy Saturday, Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great is to be celebrated.

The Clergy and Laity of the North Anthracite Ukrainian Catholic Protopresbytery (Deanery) will gather on this date to pray together in unity, as we prepare to journey with our Lord Jesus through the 40-day Great Fast, in preparation for Holy Week and Pascha.
After the services everyone is welcome to enjoy the cover dish meal that will be prepared by all the parishes in the deanery.

VESPERS FOR FORGIVENESS SUNDAY: Remember the date for the services to be held in our Church on Sunday, February 14 at 4:00PM.
Come and begin The Great Fast (Lent) in the true Christian spirit of forgiveness, with our beautiful Vesper Evening Prayer Service composed especially for the evening before the first day of The Great Fast. All our parishioners from all our parishes are welcome and encouraged to attend and participate. The Clergy and Laity of the North Anthracite Ukrainian Catholic Protopresbytery (Deanery) will gather on this date to pray together in unity, as we prepare to journey with our Lord Jesus through the 40-day Great Fast, in preparation for Holy Week and Pascha.
After the services everyone is welcome to enjoy the cover dish meal that will be prepared by all the parishes in the deanery.
DESSERTS: If you can help in the servings of desserts please bring your baked goods, puddings or any other goodies to the church on Saturday, February 13th. We would appreciate your help in this matter.

TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC CHURCH invites the public to its 2010 Myasopusna Pre-Lenten celebration. This cultural event takes place Sunday, February 7, from noon to 4:00 PM at the church hall, Center and Bliss Streets, Hanover Section of Nanticoke. The Dinner (a platter of roast pork, kobasi, baked ham, varenyky/pierogies, homemade borscht, homemade blackbread and butter, rice pudding, and a beverage) will be served from 12:30 to 1:30. Dinner will be followed by live Ukrainian music and dance performances, including the Holy Year Choir, Kazka, the St. Mary’s Ukrainian Dancers, a selection of Klezmer tunes, and more. Participation of Ukrainian crafters will include embroidery, woodcrafts, pysanky, and ceramics displays, with many items available for purchase. We hope to have a la carte items available for takeouts in the afternoon. This is a perfect way to spend your Super bowl Sunday afternoon, and perhaps take home something special to eat for your party as well!

GENERATION OF FAITH MEETING: A Generation of Faith meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the church hall. The focus of this meeting will be the Great Fast, the 40-day preparation for Pascha, the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Everyone is welcome!

ALTAR CANDLES: Altar candles for the month of January are requested by Ann Beshada in memory of all deceased Conniff and Beshada Family members. The month of February is requested by Mrs. Florence Kloap and Family in memory of William Kloap. The months of May, July, August, October, November and December are still available for your requests. Honor a family member or friend or a memory of a deceased family or friend. The Candles will burn during every Church Service for the Month.

CEMETERY: Our thanks to Alexander Gavula from West Virginia who sent a donation of $100 toward Cemetery Care. God’s blessing on him for this generous donation.

SYMPATHY: We extend our sincere Sympathy to Mary Ann Andrukaitis whose brother, Louis Tapia was called to his eternal rest. May his memory be forever.
