The Easter Cycle
The Easter Cycle lasts from the Sunday of St. Thomas (the Sunday after Easter) to the Sunday of All Saints. The period from Easter to Pentecost embraces fifty days and is called by the common name of Pentecost. The Sundays in the Easter season are each named for the event recounted in the Gospel of that day. These occur in the following order: The Sunday of St. Thomas, the Sunday of the Myrrh-bearing Women, The Sunday of the Paralyic Man, The Sunday of the Samaritan Woman, the Sunday of the Blind Man, the Sunday of the Fathers of the Church, the Sunday of the Descent of the Holy Spirit (Pentecost) and the Sunday of All Saints. The Easter season, i.e., the post-feast of the Resurrection, lasts forty days, that is, to the feast of the Ascension of our Lord.
The Easter cycle includes thirty two Sundays which follow in consecutive order and for this reason are called ordinary Sundays to distinguish them from the festal Sundays which have their own proper epistle and Gospel. There are a few such festal Sundays in the year, as for example, the Sunday before and after the Nativity of Our Lord and the Sunday before and after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The ordinary Sundays begin with the Sunday of All Saints and end their cycle on the Sunday of Zaccheus which is followed by the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee. The number of these ordinary Sundays depends upon the date of Easter; that is, if Easter comes earlier then there will be more ordinary Sundays, if later, fewer ordinary Sundays.
BUS TRIP TO VIEW THE SHROUD OF TURIN EXIBITION: Rev. Father John Seniw and Rev. Father Roman Petryshak invites you for a bus trip to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Philadelphia to view the Shroud of Turin Exhibition on Sunday, May 23rd. The bus will leave Transfiguration of Our Lord Church in Nanticoke at 12:30 PM. . Stops will be at Cathedral for honoring the Shroud, then the Treasury of Faith Museum and a Shrine. A stop for dinner will be made on the way home. The cost for the trip will be $25 per person. First come first serve, payment reserves your seat. BLESSING OF THE ICON: A Pontifical Divine Liturgy and the Blessing of the new Icon will be celebrated on Sunday, May 2, 2010 by Metropolitan Archbishop – Most Reverend Stefan Soroka at 11:30 AM. All parishioners are urged to attend. The Divine Liturgy will be in English with congregational responses. There will be no Divine Liturgy on Saturday, May 1, 2010. Please try to be in attendance for this special occasion. All parishioners are invited to attend the Divine Liturgy and the Parish Family Dinner to follow. Reservation slips are in the vestibule if you did not receive one or you may print you name and number attending on a plain piece of paper. We are asking you to please inform us if you will be with your Parish Family gathering. Bring you children and grandchildren to help make for a happy occasion. The menu will be the same as our Sviachene (After Easter Dinner).
MOTHER’S DAY: Pennsylvania for Human Life Annual Carnation Drive to support the Pro-life Center will be held Mother’s Day, May 9th. We need volunteers to do the sale. If you can possibly be so kind to co-ordinate, this project, please inform the Parish.
