ANOINTING OF THE SICK ON HOLY WEDNESDAY

The General Anointing of the Sick is done for all baptized Christians present at the Liturgy of Presanctified Gifts on Holy Wednesday.  If there are two blessings, the first blessings is done at the end of The Litany of Peace and the second is after the Litany of Supplication.  If more than one priest is present the people should be anointed by each of the priests present, up to seven priests in total.  The Prayer of Anointing is said first for all present, then each is anointed on the forehead, cheeks and palm of the hands with the formula, “The servant of God is anointed for the healing of soul and body, for the forgiveness of sins and life everlasting.” This is the one time each year that this Mystery (Sacrament) is provided to all the faithful in attendance and forgives all sins so that even one who has not “gone to confession” is now freed from sin and if the person remains free from sin, is free to receive of the Eucharist, the Holy Body and Blood of Christ.

Pick up your Palms as you enter the church.  Hold your Palms when Father Walter incenses the church-following that Father will bless the Palms while you hold them.

ASK FATHER A QUESTION.  Father, Lent ends on Lazarus Saturday, now what?  Why are we still fasting?    We fast because we are in Holy Week, a completely new fast period.  Just as the children of Israel fasted before the Passover, we fast during Holy Week.  We fast for the Eternal Passover.  Passover?  What’s Passover?  Passover is when the Angel of Death came over the nation of Egypt, the 10th plague came, because in vengeance Pharaoh swore death on the first born son of every Jewish Family in Egypt.  That night the Angel of Death came and took the first-born male of every household in Egypt that did not have the blood of the lamb on the doorpost and lintel (top of the door frame) of their house, but “passed over” those with the lamb’s blood marker.  God instructed all the Israelites to slaughter the lamb and to eat the “whole” lamb that night.  Nothing was to be left until morning.  Because of the speed and the urgency of the Pharaoh’s decree, the Israelites did not have time to bake bread and to allow it to rise, hence the unleavened bread, the bread of haste, was made and eaten with bitter herbs and the lamb that evening.  This is the Passover Meal.  This is a type of resurrection, passing over from death into life, from slavery to freedom, that the bitter herbs are to remind them of 400 years of bondage in Egypt.  Pascha has three meanings that are all intended at one and the same time:  1)  Pascha is the Greek from the Jewish word “Pesach,” meaning Passover.  2)  Pascha is also translated from the Greek to means “lamb.”  3)  Pascha also means “bread.”  When we celebrate the Feast of Pascha, we are celebrating:  the Passover into Eternal Life, the Lamb of God, and the Bread of Eternal Life.

ASK FATHER A QUESTION……. Father, the betrayal of Jesus was foretold by the prophet Zechariah 11:12-13 ….. it leads one to believe that Judas is just a mechanism to fulfill the prophecy of Jesus.  Is this is true?  What happens to Judas?  In short, the answer to the question is no.  The reason for this is that Judas has free will, just like us.  He can choose how to respond to God and what he will do.  From his free will, desire to obtain more money, Judas betrays Christ.  After the crucifixion, Judas recognizes his sin of betraying the Messiah.  Perhaps his greater sin is that he falls into despair and kills himself.  He does this being tempted by the Devil.  This is perhaps the bigger sin.  The devil leads him to believe that God would not forgive him of betraying an innocent man.  Ultimately, the point is that just because something is foretold does not mean that that person has to act it out like a mechanical robot.  God lives outside of time and knows everything everyone will ever do.  When God reveals this message to a prophet to lead people to salvation- it does not mean that that person’s actions are “pre-destined”- meaning that that person does not have free will to act as they choose.  Imagine if on that morning Judas came to his senses and repented and begged forgiveness to Jesus and the Apostles for his betrayal.  We would be telling the great story of the Conversion of Saint Judas The Repenter; however, he chose to follow the deceiving words of the deceiver, fall into despair, thinking he could not be forgiven, so he hung himself.  All these are of Judas’ free will choices.  God’s saving plan is revealed in salvation history, i.e. time, so that we could know the truth and believe.  Once you grasp this you realize that Judas is not mere mechanism to fulfill what is foretold.

“And I said unto them, If you think good, give me my hire; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my hire thirty pieces of silver. And the Lord said unto me, Cast it unto the potter, the goodly price that I was prized at by them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them unto the potter, in the house of the Lord.” (Zechariah 11:12-13).

The Divine Liturgy of our Father among the Saints, Basil the Great, is celebrated ten times each year: January 1st (Feast of Saint Basil); December 24th (Christmas Eve); January 5th (Theophany Eve); First thru Fifth Sundays of Lent (not Palm Sunday); and Holy Thursday & the Virgil Liturgy of Easter Sunday.

Petitions & Prayers for Our Parishioners:  John Ostrum,Donna Winsock, Sonia Dempsey, Catherine Halloway, Charles Hallaway, Louise Hubiack, John Udiski, Paul Hoover & James Bencho.  Keep them in your prayers.  If anyone would like to be included in the prayer list drop a note in the basket, email the church or text Michalene Ostrum at 570-704-7079.

The Sanctuary Light for this week is requested by Ann Magill IMO Ann Beshada.

The Paschal Homily of St. John Chrysostom

If any man be devout and love God, let him enjoy this fair and radiant triumphal feast. If any man be a wise servant, let him rejoicing enter into the joy of his Lord. If any have labored long in fasting, let him now receive his recompense.

If any have wrought from the first hour, let him today receive his just reward. If any have come at the third hour, let him with thankfulness keep the feast. If any have arrived at the sixth hour, let him have no misgivings; because he shall in no wise be deprived therefore. If any have delayed until the ninth hour, let him draw near, fearing nothing.

If any have tarried even until the eleventh hour, let him, also, be not alarmed at his tardiness; for the Lord, who is jealous of his honor, will accept the last even as the first; he gives rest unto him who comes at the eleventh hour, even as unto him who has wrought from the first hour.  And he shows mercy upon the last and cares for the first, and to the one he gives, and upon the other he bestows gifts. And he both accepts the deeds, and welcomes the intention, and honors the acts and praises the offering.

Wherefore, enter you all into the joy of your Lord; and receive your reward, both the first and likewise the second. You rich and poor together, hold high festival. You sober and you heedless, honor the day. Rejoice today, both you who have fasted and you who have disregarded the fast. The table is full-laden; feast ye all sumptuously. The calf is fatted; let no one go hungry away. Enjoy ye all the feast of faith: Receive ye all the riches of loving-kindness.

Let no one bewail his poverty, for the universal kingdom has been revealed. Let no one weep for his iniquities, for pardon has shown forth from the grave. Let no one fear death, for the Savior’s death, has set us free. He that was held prisoner of it has annihilated it. By descending into Hell, He made Hell captive.

He embittered it when it tasted of His flesh. And Isaiah, foretelling this, did cry:

Hell, said he, was embittered when it encountered Thee in the lower regions. It was embittered, for it was abolished. It was embittered, for it was mocked. It was embittered, for it was slain. It was embittered, for it was overthrown. It was embittered, for it was fettered in chains. It took a body and met God face to face. It took earth and encountered Heaven. It took that which was seen and fell upon the unseen.

O Death, where is your sting? O Hell, where is your victory?
Christ is risen, and you are overthrown!
Christ is risen, and the demons are fallen!
Christ is risen, and the angels rejoice!
Christ is risen, and life reigns!
Christ is risen, and not one dead remains in the grave!

For Christ, being risen from the dead has become the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. To Him be glory and dominion unto ages of ages. Amen. (an excerpt.)

ASK FATHER A QUESTION…What is the significance of the number 40 in the Bible?  Why did God allow Christ to be tempted in the desert in Christ’s 40 days of preparation for His Ministry?  In Salvation History between sinning and entering the Kingdom of Heaven is a long life and preparation period.  The number 40 repeats in the Holy Scriptures as a “type” of Spiritual journey either preparing to do some special calling of God in the material world or a cleansing before it is acceptable to enter the “holy Land.”  Forty years in the desert of the nation of Israel, Moses on Mount Sinai forty days and forty nights, Forty days of rain at the time of Noah, Jesus going out in the desert and preparing forty days among others.

Do not forget Jesus is fully man as well as Holy God.  So just as the devil has access to tempt men, so too the devil has access to tempt the Son of Man, Jesus Christ.  Because, Jesus demonstrates that yes, a man can be successful and does have power over devils.

PRAYER    by St. John Climacus

Prayer is by its very nature a dialogue and a union with God. Its effect is to hold the world together and to achieve a reconciliation with God. Prayer is the mother and daughter of tears. It is expiation of sin, a bridge over temptation, a barrier against affliction. It wipes out conflict, is the work of Angels and the nourishment of all bodiless beings. Prayer is the future gladness, an endless work, a wellspring of virtues, a source of grace, hidden progress, food for the soul, an illumination of the mind, an axe against despair, a proof of hope, sorrow done away with, the wealth of monks, the treasure of hesychasts, the reduction of anger, the mirror of progress, a demonstration of success, evidence of one’s condition, the future revealed, and a sign of glory. For him who truly prays, prayer is the court, the judgment hall and the tribunal of the Lord before the judgment to come.  Let us rise and listen to what the holy queen of the virtues cries with a loud voice and says to us: Come to me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and you shall find rest for your souls and healing for your wounds. For my yoke is easy and is sovereign remedy for great sins.  Those of us about to stand before our King and God in order to speak with Him should not move into this without preparation, lest, seeing us from afar without weapons and clothing suitable for those who stand before the King, He should order his servants and slaves to bind us, to drive us out of His sight and to tear up our petitions and throw them in our face.  When you are going to stand before the Lord. let the garment of your soul be woven throughout with the thread of wrongs suffered but forgotten. Otherwise, prayer will be of no benefit to you.  Pray in all simplicity. For both the tax collector and the prodigal son were reconciled to God by a single phrase.  The work of prayer is one and the same for all, but there are various and many different kinds of prayer. Some converse with God as with a friend and master, interceding with praise and petition, not for themselves but for others. Some strive for greater [spiritual] treasures and glory and for confidence in prayer. Others ask for complete deliverance from their adversary. Some beg to receive some kind of rank; others for complete forgiveness of debts. Some ask to be released from prison; others for remission from offences.  Before all else, let us list sincere thanksgiving first on the scroll of our prayer. On the second line, we should put confession and heartfelt contrition of soul. Then let us present our petition to the King of all. This is the best way of prayer, as it was shown to one of the monks by an angel of the Lord…  Do not be over-complicated in the words you use when praying, because the simple and unadorned lisping of the children has often won the heart of their Heavenly Father.  Try not to talk excessively when you pray, lest your mind be distracted in searching for words. One word of the tax collector appeased God, and one cry of faith saved the thief. Talkative prayer often distracts the mind and leads to fantasy, whereas brevity makes for concentration.  You cannot learn to see just because someone tell you to do so. You require your own natural power of sight. In the same way, you cannot discover from the teachings of others the beauty of prayer. Prayer has its own teacher in God, Who ‘teaches us knowledge’  (Ps 93:10) and grants prayer to those who pray and blesses the years of the just.  Amen.  from The Ladder of Divine Ascent; Step 28

BOOK(S) OF THE MONTH FOR March:

The Lives of the Desert Fathers

Translated By Norman Russell

ISBN:  0879079347

HOLY SATURDAY

Great and Holy Saturday is the day on which Christ reposed in the tomb. The Church calls this day the Blessed Sabbath.  “The great Moses mystically foreshadowed this day when he said:  God blessed the seventh day.  This is the blessed Sabbath, This is the day of rest, on which the only-begotten Son of God rested from all His works….”  (Vesperal Liturgy of Holy Saturday) By using this title the Church links Holy Saturday with the creative act of God. In the initial account of creation as found in the Book of Genesis, God made man in His own image and likeness. To be truly himself, man was to live in constant communion with the source and dynamic power of that image: God. Man fell from God. Now Christ, the Son of God through whom all things were created, has come to restore man to communion with God. He thereby completes creation. All things are again as they should be. His mission is consummated. On the Blessed Sabbath He rests from all His works.

Holy Saturday is a neglected day in parish life. Few people attend the Services. Popular piety usually reduces Holy Week to one day—Holy Friday. This day is quickly replaced by another—Easter Sunday. Christ is dead and then suddenly alive. Great sorrow is suddenly replaced by great joy. In such a scheme Holy Saturday is lost.  In the understanding of the Church, sorrow is not replaced by joy; it is transformed into joy. This distinction indicates that it is precisely within death that Christ continues to effect triumph.  We sing that Christ is “…trampling down death by death” in the troparion of Easter. This phrase gives great meaning to Holy Saturday. Christ’s repose in the tomb is an “active” repose. He comes in search of His fallen friend, Adam, who is all men. Not finding him on earth, he descends to the realm of death, translated Hades* in the Holy Scriptures. There He finds him and brings him life once again. This is the victory: the dead are given life. The tomb is no longer a forsaken, lifeless place. By His death Christ tramples down death by death.  The traditional icon used by the Church on the feast of Easter is an icon of Holy Saturday: the descent of Christ into Hades. It is a painting of theology, for no one has ever seen this event. It depicts Christ, radiant in hues of white and blue, standing on the shattered gates of Hades. With arms outstretched He is joining hands with Adam and all the other Old Testament righteous whom He has found there. He leads them from the kingdom of death. By His death He tramples death.

“Today Hades cries out groaning:
I should not have accepted the Man born of Mary.
He came and destroyed my power.
He shattered the gates of brass.
As God, He raised the souls I had held captive.
Glory to Thy cross and resurrection, O Lord!”
(Vesperal Liturgy of Holy Saturday)

**Hades is not “Hell,” but where the souls of the dead wait for judgement.

THE FIVE SATURDAYS OF THE DECEASED (SOROKUSTY)

The Five Saturdays of the Deceased (Sorokousty) The Church Typikon designates the five Sorokousty/ Saturdays of the Deceased for 2026 as February 7th; February 28th, March 7th and 14th, and May 23rd.  It is a tradition of our Holy Church to commemorate the memories of our beloved deceased at Matins of the Deceased (Parastas) on these five Saturdays of the year.  Sorokousty Services will be celebrated at 8:00am.  Services will be held for Saint Vladimir Church also at the same time.

ASK FATHER A QUESTION…….Father, I heard that the Gospel of Luke has a “theme” … What is the theme?  The theme of St. Luke’s Gospel, the good news of Christ’s resurrection from the dead, is that of the suffering servant in Isaiah Chapter 53. STOP.   Go Read Chapter and then return.  This why St. Luke on the Holy Doors is depicted as an angel with a face like that of a bull.  Jesus, the suffering servant sacrificed like the bull of the Old Testament sin offering to make atonement for the priests of Israel and their entire households. (This would include the whole nation of Israel.)  The bull offering on the Day of Atonement was for the sins of the entire nation of Israel for the past year, in addition to each individual person offering a sacrifice for their personal sins as instructed by the priests.  Jesus is this bull, the suffering servant, and at the same time the Lamb of God.  The Lamb of God refers to not just a sacrifice for sin, but is the eternal Passover Lamb (Paschal Lamb) just as Moses was instructed to sacrifice the Lamb put the lamb’s blood on the door posts and above the door (lintel) as a sign to the Angel of Death that these were followers of God and that they had consumed the whole lamb that night.  Jesus now is the Eternal Paschal Lamb of God and His blood a sign for Passing Over Eternal Life, not merely avoiding Death this one night.  So Luke is telling us Jesus Christ, the suffering servant, if we follow Him and do as instructed all of our sins are atoned for and having consumed His body and blood we will Passover to eternal life- only if we do as instructed.  Don’t forget Simeon doubted a virgin would give birth, and that would be the Messiah.  So the Lord told him because of his doubt, his punishment would be that he would live to see it happen, circa  250 B.C.

“Let My Prayer Rise up”

Let my prayer rise up, Like incense before You; The lifting of my hands, As an evening sacrifice.

Lord, I call to You, hear me; attend to the voice of my prayer when I cry to You.

Let my prayer rise up, Like incense before You; The lifting of my hands, As an evening sacrifice.

Set, O Lord, a watch before my mouth and a door of enclosure around my lips.

Let my prayer rise up, Like incense before You; The lifting of my hands, As an evening sacrifice.

Incline not my heart unto words of evil, to make excuses for my sins.

Let my prayer rise up, Like incense before You; The lifting of my hands, As an evening sacrifice.

Veneration of the Holy Cross Third Sunday of Lent

On the Third Sunday of Holy Lent, the Ukrainian Catholic Church commemorates the Precious and Life-Giving Cross of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Services include a special veneration of the Cross, which prepares the faithful for the commemoration of the Crucifixion during Holy Week.  The commemoration and ceremonies of the Third Sunday of Lent are closely parallel to the feasts of the Veneration of the Cross (September 14) and the Procession of the Cross (August 1).  Not only does the Sunday of the Holy Cross prepare us for commemoration of the Crucifixion, but it also reminds us that the whole of Lent is a period when we are crucified with Christ.  As we have “crucified the flesh with its passions and desires” (Galatians 5:24), and will have mortified ourselves during these forty days of the Fast, the precious and life-giving Cross is now placed before us to refresh our souls and encourage us who may be filled with a sense of bitterness, resentment, and depression.  The Cross reminds us of the Passion of our Lord, and by presenting to us His example, it encourages us to follow Him in struggle and sacrifice, being refreshed, assured, and comforted.  In other words, we must experience what the Lord experienced during His Passion – being humiliated in a shameful manner.  The Cross teaches us that through pain and suffering we shall see the fulfillment of our hopes: the heavenly inheritance and eternal glory.
