The Lives of Saints Peter and Paul
THE HOLY APOSTLE PETER
The son of Jonah and brother of Andrew the First-Called, of the tribe of Simeon and the town of Bethsaida, he was a fisherman and was at first called Simon, but the Lord was pleased to call him Cephas, or Peter (Jn 1:42). He was the first of the disciples to give clear expression to his faith in the Lord Jesus, saying: “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God” (Mt 16:16). His love for the Lord was very strong, and his faith in Him went from strength to strength.
When the Lord was put on trial, Peter denied him three times, but it needed only one look into the face of the Lord, and Peter’s soul was filled with shame and repentance. After the descent of the Holy Spirit, Peter became a fearless and powerful preacher of the Gospel. After his first sermon in Jerusalem, about 3,000 souls were converted to the Faith. He preached the Gospel throughout Palestine and Asia Minor, in Italy and Illyria. He performed many wonders, healing the sick and raising the dead, and even his shadow had the power of healing the sick. He had a major struggle with Simon the Magician, who declared himself to be from God but was actually a servant of the devil. He finally put him to shame and overcame him.
Peter was condemned to death on the order of the wicked Emperor Nero, a friend of Simon’s. After installing Linus as Bishop of Rome and exhorting and encouraging the flock of Christ there, Peter went to his death with joy. When he saw the cross before him, he asked the executioner to crucify him upside-down, because he felt himself unworthy to die in the same way as his Lord. And so this great servant of the greatest Master went to his rest and received a crown of eternal glory.

THE HOLY APOSTLE PAUL
Born in Tarsus and of the tribe of Benjamin, he was formerly called Saul and studied under Gamaliel. He was a Pharisee and a persecutor of Christians. He was wondrously converted to the Christian faith by the Lord Himself, who appeared to him on the road to Damascus. He was baptized by the Apostle Ananias, named Paul and enrolled in the work of the Great Apostles.
He preached the Gospel everywhere with burning zeal, from the borders of Arabia to the land of Spain, among both the Jews and the heathen, and receiving the title of “The Apostle to the Gentiles.” His fearful sufferings were matched only by his superhuman endurance. Through all the years of his preaching, he hung from day to day like a thread between life and death.
Filling his days and nights with toil and sufferings for Christ, organizing the Church in many places and receiving a high level of perfection, he was able to say: “I live, yet not I but Christ lives in me” (Gal 2:20). He was beheaded in Rome in the reign of Nero, at the same time as St. Peter

THE U.S. FLAG IS A SYMBOL

The U.S. flag is a symbol
Of what Americans treasure;
It represents the values
We cherish beyond measure.

Our flag flies high for freedom,
For legal equality,
For Constitutional rights,
And justice for you and me.

Our flag flies high for bravery,
The courage it takes to fight
And even give our lives
For what we know is right.

Our flag flies high for compassion;
We quickly help those in need;
When there’s a need for service,
Americans take the lead.

The American flag is an icon,
Representing the American way;
Our hearts swell with emotion,
When we see it ripple and sway.

Our Gift to the Fallen

For each soldier that has fallen so that many may stand
We honor their spirit as they pass to God’s hand
For without their sacrifice we would live forever in fear
We pray for their loved ones and provide a salute and a tear
God help us heal the wounds of hate and the misery of war
That is our gift to our fallen heroes that are amongst us no more.

A MEMORIAL DAY PRAYER

Eternal God, Creator of years, of centuries, Lord of whatever is beyond time,
Maker of all species and master of all history —
How shall we speak to you from our smallness and inconsequence?
Except that you have called us to worship you in spirit and in truth;
You have dignified us with loves and loyalties;
You have lifted us up with your loving kindnesses.
Therefore we are bold to come before you without groveling
[though we sometimes feel that low]
and without fear [though we are often anxious].
We sing with spirit and pray with courage because you have dignified us;
You have redeemed us from the aimlessness of things’ going meaninglessly well.
God, lift the hearts of those for whom this holiday is not just diversion,
but painful memory and continued deprivation.
Bless those whose dear ones have died needlessly, wastefully [as it seems]
in accident or misadventure.
We remember with compassion those who have died serving their countries
in the futility of combat.
There is none of us but must come to bereavement and separation, when all the answers we are offered fail the question death asks of each of us.
We believe that you will provide for us as others have been provided with the fulfillment of “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”

The feast of the Lord’s Ascension always falls on a Thursday, on the fortieth day after Christ’s resurrection. This is one of the principal feast days of our Lord. It celebrates the memory of Christ’s Ascension into heaven and underscores its significance for Christ and for us. St. John Chrysostom, in his homily on the Ascension says: “Today the human race is completely reconciled with God. The ancient battle and enmity have disappeared. We, who were unworthy to live even on earth _ are now lifted up to heaven, we, who do not even deserve earth, we ascend to heaven and inherit the throne of the King and Lord. Human nature, against which the cherubim guarded paradise, is now raised up above all the cherubim.”

MOTHERS’ DAY OBSERVANCE
The aspiration of local legend Anna Marie Reeves Jarvis and her daughter, Anna Jarvis, was to establish a national memorial day dedicated to all mothers, both alive and deceased. After her mother’s death in 1905, Anna Jarvis was relentless in achieving this goal. Jarvis was successful in getting West Virginia Governor Glassock to proclaim a statewide Mother’s Day in 1910. Four years later, President Woodrow Wilson signed into law a U.S. House of Representatives resolution, introduced at Jarvis’ request, making the second Sunday in May the national Mother’s Day. Mother’s Day has since become an international holiday, celebrated in 152 countries.
Anna Marie Reeves Jarvis and her family lived in Taylor County in the mid-1800s. Stories about her many good deeds and leadership qualities had become part of the local folklore by the time of her death. She and her brother, a doctor, had formed the Mothers Day Friendship Clubs to work with women to prevent the deaths of children by teaching sanitation methods. They explained to mothers the importance of boiling water, how to keep food from spoiling, and other antiseptic methods.
Jarvis and the women who joined these Mothers Day Friendship Clubs refused to take sides during the Civil War. Instead they provided nursing services and taught sanitation methods which helped save thousands of soldiers’ lives on both sides, North and South. After the war, Jarvis was tireless in promoting peace and good will among neighbors who may have differed politically. She conceived a family day picnic honoring mothers, called Mothers Friendship Day; its real goal, however, was to reunite alienated neighbors. Following a prayer, the band began to play “Should Auld Acquaintances Be Forgot.” By the time they reached the word “forgot,” neighbors were weeping and shaking hands.
Anna Jarvis held a memorial service for her mother in 1907, and all mothers the next year. Services were held at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, which is now the International Mothers Day Shrine. Anna Jarvis’ birthplace, where the Jarvis family lived from 1854 to 1864, is now a museum.
The Mother’s Day Observance project is documented through photographs, a written report, a genealogy of the Jarvis family, and a videotape of the Anna Jarvis Birthplace Museum.

LOTTERY TICKETS: We certainly want to thank Mike Sinko for all his efforts in selling the Lottery Tickets for the month of May. Mike placed himself in front of different Food Markets to sell as many as he could. It is very difficult to try to get people to sell the tickets, as a few of our sellers are no longer with us. We thank all those who purchased and sold tickets. Watch your numbers and good luck.

THANKS: Many thanks to the few women who came to clean the Church also to those helped with the preparations for our Sviachene Dinne. God bless you always.

The Mid Pentecost
On Wednesday after the Sunday of the Paralytic, which falls exactly in the middle of the Pentecost season, that period between Easter (the Resurrection) and the feast of the Pentecost or Descent of the Holy Spirit, The Eastern Church celebrates the feast of Mid-Pentecost which may mean “Half Way” because it is the half-way mark between the feast of Easter and the feast of the Pentecost, or “Middle Wednesday” since it falls on the Wednesday in the middle of the Pentecostal season. The Synaxary of that day explains the reason for the institution of this feast: “On the Wednesday of the Paralytic we celebrate the feast of Mid-Pentecost for the sake of honoring the two great feast days – Easter and the Pentecost. The feast of Mid-Pentecost has an eight day post-feast which lasts to the Wednesday after the Sunday of the Samaritan Woman.
The feast of the Mid-Pentecost aims to strengthen our faith in the risen Christ, to inspire us to observe the commandments of God and to predispose us for the feast of the Ascension of our Lord and the Descent of the Holy Spirit.

The Easter Cycle

The Easter Cycle lasts from the Sunday of St. Thomas (the Sunday after Easter) to the Sunday of All Saints. The period from Easter to Pentecost embraces fifty days and is called by the common name of Pentecost. The Sundays in the Easter season are each named for the event recounted in the Gospel of that day. These occur in the following order: The Sunday of St. Thomas, the Sunday of the Myrrh-bearing Women, the Sunday of the Blind Man, the Sunday of the Fathers of the Church, the Sunday of the Descent of the Holy Spirit (Pentecost) and the Sunday of All Saints. The Easter season, i.e., the post-feast of the Resurrection, lasts forty days, that is, to the feast of the Ascension of our Lord.
The Easter cycle includes thirty two Sundays which follow in consecutive order and for this reason are called ordinary Sundays to distinguish them from the festal Sundays which have their own proper epistle and Gospel. There are a few such festal Sundays in the year, as for example, the Sunday before and after the Nativity of Our Lord and the Sunday before and after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The ordinary Sundays begin with the Sunday of All Saints and end their cycle on the Sunday of Zaccheus which is followed by the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee. The number of these ordinary Sundays depends upon the date of Easter; that is, if Easter comes earlier then there will be more ordinary Sundays, if later, fewer ordinary Sundays.

God is never more than a prayer away –
may He guide you safely day by day.
