THE GREAT FAST BEGINS MONDAY
Monday, February 15, 2010 marks the beginning of The Great Fast (Lent). The Great Forty-day Fast is a special time when we intensify our prayers and spiritual life, and make personal sacrifices through fasting, self-denial, and almsgiving (acts of charity toward others). Only through proper preparation, serious effort, and the forgiveness of our sins, can we hope to grow spiritually and properly prepare for our Lord’s Passion, Death, and Resurrection. The first day of The Great Fast and Good Friday are days of strict abstinence for Ukrainian Greek Catholics – we are not permitted to eat any meat or dairy products all day long, and we should try to limit our consumption of food. All Fridays during The Great Fast are days of mandatory abstinence from all meat products. Wednesdays are also suggested as days of voluntary abstinence from meat products. Our fasting regulations are optional only for persons older than 59 and younger than 7. Everyone else is obliged to follow the rules of abstinence of our Church.
The week days of the Great Fast are aliturgical whereas no Divine Liturgy should be celebrated except for the Feast of the Annunciation. On Wednesday and Friday of the Great Fast, The Liturgy of Presanctified gifts is to be celebrated.
The Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great is to be celebrated for Sunday Liturgies during this time.
During Holy Week the Liturgy of the Presanctified gifts is to be celebrated Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. There is no Divine Liturgy celebrated on Good Friday or Holy Saturday. On Holy Saturday, Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great is to be celebrated.

ALTAR CANDLES: The Altar Candles that will burn at all Divine Liturgies and services are available for your intentions to burn for the month. The months available are March, May, July, August, October, November and December. Donations are $40, remember your loved ones living or deceased in this special way.

BUILDING AND IMPROVEMENT FUND: Our thanks to one of the November Lottery $50 winner, Barbara Shadie for sharing $25 back to our Building fund. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

BUILDING AND IMPROVEMENT FUND: Donations to our church Building & Improvement Fund were received in memory of Theodore Soppeck in the amount of $120 by Frank & Phyllis Baron, Lori Nicholas, Fred & Angie McElwee and Arlen Jones. Our thanks to those who donated to this fund and it is most appreciated.

ENVELOPES: There is still a lot of envelopes not taken. If you could possibly distribute envelopes to anyone you know, please help in this matter. Sometimes the parishioner is unable to attend Divine Liturgy but would like to have their envelopes. Any one in your neighborhood or family, try to make sure they get their envelopes. If any envelopes are not picked up or used during the year the name will be removed for the Church files.

THANKS: Through the year, many of the parishioners have volunteered for various projects. The services that you so willingly provide is greatly appreciated – whether it be the cleaning of the Church, snow removal on the sidewalks, being there for funerals to open and arrange the necessary bells etc., working at our fund-raising projects, choir singing and any other service that is connected to the Church duties. Your volunteer hours keep us in good running – Keep up the good work with God’s Blessings. We cannot forget to also thank the few non-parishioners who come in to help with our Pyrohy Projects. Thanks to all for all you do. May God grant you a wonderful year 2010.
