The Feast of the Dormition of the
Most Holy Mother Of God
August 15th

The day of the death of the Most Holy Mother of God is called the Dormition (or falling asleep) in our Church, for her body did not know corruption after death, but together with her soul was taken up into heaven, hence, another name for the feast is “the Assumption”. We have historical data to indicate how long the Mother of God remained on earth after the ascension of Christ into heaven, nor when, where, or how she died, for the Gospels say nothing of this.
Three days before the death of Mary, the Archangel Gabriel appeared and announced to her from her Son, Jesus Christ, the time of her departure into eternity. On the day of her death, in a miraculous manner the Apostles gathered in Jerusalem although they had been scattered in various countries of the then known world. St. Thomas was the only Apostle absent. The Mother of God expressed her wish to be buried in Gethsemane near her parents and her spouse, Joseph. Christ, in person, came accompanied by Angels and Saints to escort His Most Holy Mother to heaven. The Apostles, while singing holy hymns, carried the body of Mary to the grave where they remained keeping vigil for three days. On the third day, St. Thomas came from afar and desired very much to view for the last time the Most Pure Mother of God. When the grave was opened, her body was not there, only the funeral clothes in which the body had been wrapped. The Apostles then realized that Mary had been taken up body and soul into heaven.
Some ancient Tipicons prescribe the blessing of fruit of the vine (grapes), not on the feast of the Transfiguration, but on the feast of the Dormition. In the Greek Nicolo-Casulan Typicon of the twelfth-thirteenth century, we read: “Let it be known that, on the feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God, the 15th of August, grapes are blessed and eaten in church after the Divine Liturgy according to an ancient tradition.” The Typicon of Sinai of the year 1214 contains the same prescription. Similarly, the Typicons of the Lavra of St. Athanasius on Athos prescribes the blessing of grapes on the 15th of August.
We have the custom of blessing flowers on the feast of the Dormition. The Typicon of Father I. Dolnytskyj says: “Wherever the custom prevails of blessing flowers, let it be done after the Prayer behind the Ambo or after the Dismissal Prayer of the Divine Liturgy.

THE FEAST OF THE TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD
The Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ is celebrated each year on August 6th. The feast commemorates the transfiguration or Christ revealing the Fullness of Himself on Mount Tabor, when our Lord appeared in His full divine glory before the Apostles Peter, James, and John.
The event of the Transfiguration is recorded in the three Synoptic Gospels: Matthew 17:1-9, Mark 9:2-8, and Luke 9:28-36. Jesus took the Apostles Peter, James, and John with Him up a mountain, and while they were on the mountain Jesus was transfigured. He shone like the sun, and His garments became more than merely glistening white, radiating light as well.
Moses and Elijah appeared with Christ, talking to Him. Peter declared how good it was for them to be there and expressed the desire to build three booths for Moses, Elijah, and Jesus. This reference to the booths could imply that this occurred during the time of the Feast of Tabernacles when the Jews would be camping out in the fields for the grape harvest; for this Feast had acquired other associations in the course of its history, including the memory of the wanderings in the wilderness recorded in the Old Testament book of Exodus.
While Peter was speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them. A voice came from the cloud saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him.” When the disciples heard this they fell on their faces filled with awe. Jesus came to them and told them to not be afraid. When the three looked up they saw only Jesus.
As Jesus and His disciples came down the mountain, He told them not to speak of what they had seen until He had risen from the dead.

They brought to Jesus a paralytic stretched on a bed. Jesus seeing their faith, said to the palsied man, “Son, take courage, thy sins are forgiven.”Some of the scribes seeing this said to themselves, “He is blaspheming!” But Jesus, reading their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier to say, ‘Thy sins are forgiven,’ or, to say, ‘Rise up and walk.’ “And now, to convince you that the Son of Man has authority upon earth to forgive sins” – here He spoke to the palsied man –
“Rise up, take thy bed and go home!” The man rose and went to his home and the crowds seeing it were filled with awe, and praised God for giving such power to men.

Two Horses 

 There is a field, with two horses in it. From a distance, each horse looks like any other horse. But if you stop your car, or are walking by, you will notice something quite amazing.  Looking into the eyes of one horse will disclose that he is blind. His owner has chosen not to have him put down, but has made a good home for him.
This alone is amazing.
 If you stand nearby and listen, you will hear the sound of a bell.
Looking around for the source of the sound, you will see that it comes from the smaller horse in the field.
 Attached to the horse’s halter is a small bell. It lets the blind friend know where the other horse is, so he can follow.
As you stand and watch these two horses, you’ll see that the horse with the bell is always checking on the blind horse, and that the blind horse will listen for the bell and then slowly walk to where the other horse is, trusting that he will not be led astray.
 When the horse with the bell returns to the shelter of the barn each evening, it stops occasionally looks back, making sure that the blind friend isn’t too far behind to hear the bell.

Like the owners of these two horses, God does not throw us away just because we are not perfect or because we have problems or challenges. He watches over us and even brings others into our lives to help us when we are in need.
 Sometimes we are the blind horse being guided by the little ringing bell of those who God places in our lives.
Other times we are the guide horse, helping others to find their way….

 


Please listen for my bell and I’ll listen for yours.
And remember…be kinder than necessary- everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
Live simply, Love generously, Care deeply, Speak kindly…
Leave the rest to God.

Six Reasons to Light Candles in Front of Icons

Because our faith is light. Christ said, “I am the light of the world.” The light of a candle or vigil lamp reminds us of the light with which Christ illuminates our souls.

Our pray is devotion and as we, because of the work necessary, can’t stay to pray the whole week, the candle stands in reminder of our devotion to the saint the candle stands before. When the saint, who is human also, sees the candle burning knows he is remembered.

To remind us of the radiant character of the saint whose icon we light the candle in front of, for saints are called “sons of light” (John 12:36, Luke 16:8).

To serve as a reproach for our deeds of darkness, for our evil thoughts and desires, to call us to the path of evangelical light, and so that we zealously try to fulfill the Commandments of the Savior: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works” (Matthew 5:16).

So that the candle will be a small sacrifice to God, who gave Himself completely as a sacrifice for us, and as a small sign of our great gratitude and radiant love for Him from whom we ask life, health, salvation, peace and everything that only boundless heavenly love can bestow.

So terror will strike the evil powers that assail us and lead our thoughts away from the Creator, even at the time of prayer. The evil powers love darkness and tremble at every light, especially light that belongs to God and to those who reflect Him.

To remind us that the Creator created light before anything else: “And God said, ‘Let there be light;’ and there was light” (Genesis 1:3). Light must be present at the beginning of our spiritual lives, so that the light of Christ’s truth will shine within us before anything else. From the light of Christ’s truth every good is created, springs up, and grows within us.

Feast Day of SS Peter and Paul Apostles
June 29

Saints Peter and Paul are the two great apostles of the first century, martyred in Rome around the year 67 A.D. This feast commemorates the dedication of the basilicas of Saint Peter in 350 A.D. and Saint Paul in 390 A.D.
Peter was the rock on which Jesus built his church. As vicar of his Lord, Peter was the head of the Apostles. He was also the first pope. Peter led the church at Antioch, and later established the seat of the papacy at Rome. He suffered martyrdom by being hung upside down on the cross on June 29, 67 A.D.
Paul is referred to as the “Apostle to the Gentiles.” It was through Paul’s preaching efforts that Christianity spread from Israel to the non-Jewish populations surrounding the Mediterranean. As the patrons of our church, Saints Peter and Paul lead us to be constant in our belief in Jesus and in our Church.

THE NATIVITY OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST

Of all the feasts of St. John the Baptist, that of his Nativity (June 24) is the greatest. This feast, like that of his Conception, was already known in the fourth century. We have sermons on this fest given by St. John Chrysostom, St. Ambrose and St. Augustine. In his sermon for this day St. Augustine says: “Today we are celebrating the Nativity of St. John. This is an honor which no other saint enjoys Throughout the entire Christian world, only two persons are honored in their nativity: our Lord Jesus Christ and St. John the Baptist.” St. Augustine does not mention the feast of the Nativity of the Mother of God here, since this feast had not yet been instituted. In the West, we find the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Forerunner in the oldest calendar of the African Church from the fifth century.
At the time we celebrate the feast of the Nativity of St. John, in pre-Christian times our people had the custom of celebrating the feast of Kupalo. In regard to the festival of Kupalo in Ukraine, Professor S. Kylymnyk says: “The greatest most exuberant festival, which ended the summer festival of youth – of boys and girls – called “ Kupalo or Kupajlo”, which after the acceptance of Christianity was associated with the Church festival of the Nativity of John the Baptist. Hence this feast bears the double name of “John Kupalo”. The rites and songs associated with the festival “Kupalo”, like the spring songs and dances, reach back to the earliest times, to pristine poetry and rituals in honor of the life-giver, the sun.” (The Ukrainian Fold Year from the Historical Perspective. (Vol IV, p.99)

HOLY DAY: The Divine Liturgy will be celebrated for the Feast of SS Peter & Paul Saturday, June 29th at 9:00 AM this is a Holy Day of Obligation.
This feast day is our Parish name and all should attend to celebrate this Feast Day. The Divine Liturgy at 4:00 PM is the regular Sunday Liturgy.

Lord, Your wisdom always responds to my needs with unceasing peace and love and when I listen and give thanks I am blessed with results that bring goodness to me in better ways than I expect.

SUNDAY OF ALL SAINTS

The Sunday after Pentecost Sunday is called the Feast Day of All Saints. Every day we remember at least one Saint, as found on the Church Calendar, some famous, great, and some not so famous. In the eyes of God all Saints are famous and great, some we know better and have become more popular than others. For example, many men and women struggled during the American Revolution, but we are aware of only the most famous and popular, like George Washington, the same is true for the roll call of Saints in the Church.
Each man, woman and child in the great history of the Church who witnessed for Christ is regarded a Saint by the Church. Since we have no way of knowing all of them, and since the list of Saints has increased many times over, and continues to do so, our Church sets aside the Sunday after Pentecost as the Feast Day for All Saints.
We are obliged, not only to venerate the saints and to seek the assistance of the saints, but also to imitate their life and holiness. All Christians are called to holiness by virtue of the sacrament of Baptism. Every person, regardless of status and condition of life, can become a Saint and is duty-bound to people without exception when He said: “Therefore, be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.” St. Paul also reminds us of our duty to pursue holiness: “This is the will of God – your sanctification.”
What is holiness? Holiness is living according to the commandments of God and the Church. It is the daily fulfillment of God’s will, constant fidelity to the duties of one’s state, or more briefly – holiness is the Gospel translated into action, i.e. living for the end.
All the saints are very close to us for they, like us, were once citizens of our earth and are of our own flesh and bone. They are members of the same Church as we are, although they belong to the Church Triumphant while we still struggle as members of the Church on earth, the Church Militant, because we continue to battle the Evil One. They are not indifferent to our welfare and salvation. Hence, there exists no doubt that they readily listen to all our petitions and prayers and gladly present them before the throne of God.
The saints in heaven, then, are God’s beloved and intimate friends; and our protectors, intercessors and benefactors; our guides and models on the path to virtue and sanctity. May we become as they are.

CEMETERY CARE: Thank you to Joan Baurys for her donation of $100 to the Cemetery Care fund. We appreciate the generous gifts to this fund. God Bless you!

LOTTERY TICKETS: Mike Sinko gave his report of a profit of $3150 from the May Lottery ticket sales. The proceeds will go toward the repairs of the parking lot which is much need of repair. Thank you Mike and Dolores for manning this project and to all who purchased and sold tickets.

WOMEN’S SOCIETY: The parish Women’s Society enjoyed the final meeting until September with a dinner at Costello’s Restaurant in Edwardsville, PA. The next meeting will be Sept. 10th. The annual Rummage sale will be held October 11 & 12th at the church hall. New members, please join this organization from your parish.

CEMETERY SERVICE: A disappointing group of only 6 parishioners attended the services last Sunday at the Cemetery. This is open to all people and if the service was not held, some people would complain. You have the opportunity to pray for your loved ones buried in the cemetery. Father Walter with the cantering of David Youells visited each of the graves that day, so thanks should be given to him for this gesture.
