THE DAILY ROSARY
The Rosary is the easiest form of prayer. At the same time the Rosary is a most excellent prayer because it is composed of the Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Glory be to the Father. Besides these beautiful and sublime prayers, which compose the Rosary, a short meditation – which constitutes the soul of the Rosary – is added before or during each decade. The Rosary unites in itself mental and oral prayer because we pray and meditate at the same time. The Rosary is the most beautiful flower that, in the course of the centuries, sprang forth from the devotion to the great Mother of Our Savior. This prayer is now the most popular among the Children of Mary. In the past it has proved a powerful weapon against heresies, as instrument of social reform, and a form of petition most acceptable to God.
The doctrinal content of the mysteries contemplated in the recital of the Rosary is very important. Jesus and Mary dominate the chain of events. They are central persons in each mystery. They were united in the Incarnation and Redemption, and now are together in eternal life.
By contemplating the mysteries of our faith, we are incited to imitate Jesus and Mary, and the Rosary becomes an important school of Christian perfection because it focuses our lives on the two who are most worthy of true imitation – the Son of God and His Immaculate Mother.
The Rosary is essentially a prayer to Our Lady. It is not Mariolatry because Jesus is not forgotten in its recital. Mary speaks to her Children when they say the Rosary. She speaks a language all can understand, for the Rosary is, outside the official Liturgy and other church services, the most widely used public prayer. It is not reserved to any class of people. Illiterate as well as learned men equally recite it. The Pope, Bishops, priests, religious and nuns say it.
Our Blessed Lady encouraged the recital of the Rosary on several occasions, especially during her apparitions at Lourdes and Fatima. The Rosary is a powerful means of salvation, a source of consolation, a guarantee of forgiveness of our sins, a powerful defense against temptations, a sign of eternal predestination, a spiritual mine of innumerable blessings and supernatural benefits and the best means of honoring the Mother of Perpetual Help. The Saints say that we place a beautiful crown on the forehead of our heavenly Queen when we recite the Rosary. It is, therefore, no wonder, that the Blessed Virgin Mary is so generous to those who honor her with the daily Rosary.
The Church granted five-year indulgence for the recitation of the Rosary; if said with others, ten years. The Church enriched the Rosary with so many indulgences to encourage the faithful to recite it and to make it their daily prayer in honor of the Mother of God.

WOMEN’S SOCIETY: The regular monthly meeting of the Women’s Society will be held Tuesday, Oct. 14th at 6:30 PM in the Church Hall. All members please try to be present. A treat of Pizza will be presented to all present for all the good work they did during the Rummage Sale.

RUMMAGE SALE: We thank all those who contributed to the Rummage Sale. Your items for the sale were greatly appreciated. And to those who donated the monetary gifts, baked goods, food, etc. that was a big help.

PYROHY SALE: A Pyrohy sale is in the planned for December 1, 2, 2014. Of course, we do need all the help we can get to make this a success. Come join the workers, all kinds of jobs are available to help out and the more help the less for others. We do have people who do not belong to the parish that comes to help but still more is needed. Try it!

NO DIVINE LITURGY will be served on Saturday, October 25th due to the Sobor in Philadelphia, PA at the Cathedral. Regular schedule for Sunday, Oct. 26th.

PRAY FOR UKRAINE: Please participate in offering Prayers for Intercession for Ukraine to the Servant of God Metropolitan Andrew Sheptytsky at our Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 833 Franklin St., Phila., PA on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2014 with a Moleben to Metropolitan Sheptytsky beginning a 4:00 PM. A candlelight procession will follow to the monumental statue to this Servant of God located on the Cathedral grounds.
Metropolitan Andrew Sheptytsky led the people of Ukraine through a time of invasion and occupation by both Hitler’s Germany and Stalin’s Soviet Union. His faith persevered and inspired an oppressed people as they coped with those aggressors. Today, his saintly soul awaits our petitions for his intercession for our beloved Ukraine facing a new aggressor. Come and pray as one family, as one people for those who need our prayers and support.

CEMETERY: Our cemetery is being well taken care of by our caretaker Jeremy. He informs the office of the problems as they occur. We have no garbage pickup and old pots and plants are just thrown on a pile. If you have any garbage from your graves please put them in your car and dispose of them at home. When Jeremy has to remove all the waste eventually it cost many dollars. If you see anyone who does leave the garbage please tell them we have no pickup. As for the road on the far side of the cemetery that is over grown with trees and such, this is a big problem. In order to solve this and to make the road passable it is a big project and the cost would be anywhere from $5000 to $10,000. If our parishioners and the out of town people who have loved ones buried there, were asked for donations to do this job it can be done otherwise the road will remain unusable.

THE FEAST OF THE EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS
SEPTEMBER 14TH

The Holy Cross is an ever-living symbol of God’s everlasting love toward us sinners, a symbol of Christ’s total self-sacrifice, a symbol of our redemption and salvation, a symbol of Christ’s victory over death and Satan. By venerating the holy Cross we honor Christ’s sacrifice, passion and death. Whenever we sign ourselves with the sign of the holy Cross, we profess our faith in our Savior.
The Eastern Church holds the veneration of the holy Cross in such high regard it has dedicated several feasts during the year to its honor. The greatest of these is the feast of the “Universal Elevation of the Venerable and Life-giving Cross”.
The Feast of the Elevation of the Venerable Cross is a very ancient feast. However, like the history of the finding of the holy Cross of the Lord, the history of the institution of the feast has been obscured by various legends and it is not easy to separate historical fact from pious legend.
One must remember that in celebrating this feast, we are not concerned with the ordinary veneration of the holy Cross, which takes place on the third Sunday of the Great Fast, but with that aspect of the feast which is expressed in the name of the feast itself – EXALTATION OR ELEVATION – of the Cross, that is, a special solemn rite connected with the veneration and glorification of the holy Cross.
The feast of the Exaltation owes its origin to the consecration of the Church of the Resurrection of the Lord, which was erected on Golgotha, in Jerusalem, by Emperor Constantine the Great. This consecration was celebrated very solemnly during the time of Macarius, Bishop of Jerusalem, on the 13th of September in the year 335. On the day following the consecration, the solemn exaltation or elevation of the sacred wood of the Cross took place. During its elevation the people exclaimed “Lord have mercy” many times. Since that time, the Eastern Church each year has celebrated the consecration of the Church of the Resurrection of our Lord on the 13th of September, and the feast of the Exaltation of the Venerable Cross on the 14th of September.
The feast of the Exaltation, by placing the holy Cross before our eyes, reminds us of our obligation to venerate, love and confess the holy Cross. “Do not be ashamed of the Cross of Christ,” admonishes St. Cyril of Jerusalem in his forth catechesis, “even if some hide it, nevertheless, you trace it clearly upon your forehead so that the demons, seeing the royal sign, may tremble and flee far away. Make this sign when you eat and drink, when you sit, lie down, rise or walk, in a word, at every occasion.”

The Feast of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God
September 8th

One of the great feasts we celebrate at the beginning of the Liturgical Year is the feast of the Nativity of the most Holy Mother of God (Theotokos). As is evident from the words of the troparion on this festival, it is a joyful and significant feast. It is joyful because it is the birthday of the Mother of God, the Queen of Heaven and earth. It is significant because it places before our eyes the great truth of our holy faith concerning the Divine Motherhood of the most Pure Virgin Mary, from whom “shone forth the Sun of Justice, Christ our God.”
The birth of Mary, who was to become the Mother of God, was a singular source of joy for her parents – Joachim and Anna, for heaven, for earth, and for all creation. The spiritual joy occasioned by this feast of the Nativity of the Mother of God has been stressed by various Fathers of the Church.
The day following the feast of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God, the Church honors the memory of the “Holy and Righteous Ancestors of Christ, Joachim and Anna”. The Church pays them special veneration as the parents of Mary and the ancestors of Jesus Christ.
Christian iconography has also expressed great devotion to the parents of the Blessed Mother of God. Quite frequently an icon will depict St. Anna with the child Mary upon her knees, or both parents will be portrayed bringing the little Mary to the temple to consecrate her to the service of God.

ANNUAL PILGRIMAGE: This year’s 83rd Annual Pilgrimage honoring the Mother of God will be held on Sunday, October 5, 2014 on the grounds of the Motherhouse of the Sisters of the Order of St Basil the Great in Fox Chase Manor, PA. The theme of this year’s pilgrimage is “Call to Holiness” The life of Metropolitan Andrew Sheptytsky on the 70th Anniversary of his Death. FEAST DAY: The Feast day of the Beheading of John the Baptist is on Friday, August 29th. This is a Simple holyday but all should try to attend the Divine Liturgy for this Feast Day.

BRATISLAVA BOYS CHOIR: The acclaimed Bratislava Boys Choir from Bratislava, Slovakia, will perform at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Pro-Cathedral, 35 S Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre, on Friday, September 19 at 7:30 p.m. and at St. Peter’s Cathedral, 315 Wyoming Ave., Scranton, on Saturday, September 20 at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free, but a donation of $15 is suggested. The concert is being held in celebration of the one hundred fiftieth anniversary of the birth of Father Jozef Murgaš, “Radio’s forgotten genius.” It is being sponsored by the Slovak Heritage Society of Northeastern Pennsylvania in cooperation with World Artists Experiences and the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic. The 2014 Archeparchial Sobor will be held Saturday, October 25, 2014 in the Cathedral Social Hall, North Franklin Street, Philadelphia. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. and the day will conclude with the Divine Liturgy celebrated at 5 p.m. in the Cathedral by Metropolitan Stefan and the Archeparchial clergy. The theme of the Sobor is “I am the Light of the World.” (Jn 8:12)
Each parish is expected to send a minimum of two delegates. Parishes may send two additional participants for a maximum of four delegates per parish. Delegates should include parishioners of all ages and should include some parish pastoral and finance council members. Delegates from all religious communities active within the Archeparchy are invited to participate. All clergy (active and retired) are especially welcome and requested to participate. Additional information and registration forms will be forwarded to you in the near future.
Friday, October 24, 2014 will be a Clergy Day for all clerics of the Archeparchy. This session will begin at 1:15 p.m. and will end with a clergy social beginning at 5 p.m.
All clergy are expected to attend the Friday session, and at a minimum, the Archeparchial Sobor on Saturday until noon. For those clergy who are able to rearrange their Saturday evening Divine Liturgy schedules, it is hoped you will be able to remain for the afternoon Sobor sessions and participate in the concluding Divine Liturgy.

The Dormition (Assumption) of the Blessed Virgin Mary
AUGUST 15TH
This feast commemorates the happy death of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Her death was so calm and free from pains and remorse’s that it seemed to be a “sleep.”
It is an article of faith that the Blessed Mother of our Savior was taken body and soul into heaven upon her death. Although the Blessed Virgin really died and her soul was separated from her body, the latter, however, was preserved from corruption and shortly afterwards was reunited to her soul. Thus the Blessed Virgin entered heaven with a glorified body and soul.
It is a matter of dispute whether our Lady died at Jerusalem or Ephesus where she was supposed to have lived with Saint John. Two cities claim to be the place of her departure. Since the feast of the “Assumption” or “Falling Asleep” of our Lady had been kept in Ephesus even in the first century, it is probable that the Mother of God completed her earthly life in that city of Asia Minor.
Neither do we know how many years after Christ’s death the Blessed Virgin remained on earth. Some writers affirm that she died at the age of seventy-two, that is, twenty two years after our Lord’s death.
The feast itself was introduced in the second or third century, for Pope Gelasius I (492-496), calls it very old in one of his letters. In the fifth century it spread to the whole Church.
After the Divine Liturgy the priest blesses the flowers, which the people bring to the church. After the sprinkling and blessing they take them home, using them in various ways as a blessed thing.

DEANERY YOUTH PICNIC: A Picnic for the youth of all the parishes in our North Anthracite Deanery will be held on Thursday, August 21, 2014 at the Lackawanna State Park beginning at 10:00 AM. Father Dan Troyan will give an inspirational talk to the youth. All are invited to attend.
