ALTAR CANDLES: The Altar Candles will burn for all services in the month of January in memory of Frank Dempsey by his Wife Sonya Dempsey.

SHROUD OF TURIN MEETING: A meeting will be held this Thursday, January 16th at the Church Hall, 4:00 PM. Everyone who is interested is invited to attend this meeting as the time is nearing for the Shroud of Turin to arrive at our Parish – March 2 – 15, 2014. Please get interested in this sacred presentation. The more people that will be interested the better the occasion will be.

UKRAINIAN CHRISTMAS SUPPER: Our thanks to all who attended the Ukrainian Supper on Sunday, January 5th. It was a nice affair and more parishioners should be interested in this get together. It is good to keep the Parish Family in this supper or in any function that the parish is providing. We must do more to try and keep the parish interested. If you have any suggestions as to what you can do to improve these affairs or any other things that we could do to have all the people together as a Parish Family please voice your opinions.

THE CHRISTMAS CARD LIST

There is a list of folks I know
All written in a book,
And every year at Christmas time
I go and take a look,

THE HOLY SHROUD

The Shroud of Turin is a linen cloth
bearing the image of a man
who appears to have been physically hurt
in a manner consistent with crucifixion.
It is kept in the royal chapel of the
Cathedral of St. John the Baptist
Catholic Church in Turin, Italy
It will be a joy to be able to share
with you this opportunity to venerate and
honor an image of the body of
our Crucified Lord.

UKRAINIAN CHRISTMAS – Plans was discussed for having our Ukrainian Holy Supper January 6th. The date for the Christmas Eve is on a Monday so it was decided by Father and the council to have the supper on Sunday, January 5th, 2014. This affair will be celebrated if we have enough people interested in attending. A signup sheet is in the vestibule if you will attend. This is a cover dish and the parish will supply the Fish and pyrohys. If we do not have people interested the affair will be cancelled.

THANKS: Through the year, many of the parishioners have volunteered for various projects. The services that you so willingly provide is greatly appreciated – whether it be the cleaning of the Church, snow removal on the sidewalks, being there for funerals to open and arrange the necessary bells etc., the baking of the Holy communion & Myrovania breads, working at our fund-raising projects, choir singing and any other service that is connected to the Church duties. Your volunteer hours keep us in good running – Keep up the good work with God’s Blessings. We cannot forget to also thank the few non-parishioners who come in to help with our Pyrohy Projects. Thanks to all for all you do. May God grant you a wonderful year 2014.

MALANKA: Northeastern Pennsylvania’s 10th Annual MALANKA is scheduled for Saturday evening, January 11, 2014 from 6:00pm to 1:00am at St. Vladimir Parish Center, 728 North Seventh Avenue, Scranton. Tickets are $40.00 per person and can be obtained by contacting Gerry Adamchak or Ann Beshada No tickets will be sold at the door – advance reservations are required.

PRAYERS: Please remember in your prayers all those who are in Nursing Facilities, sick at home and all who are unable to attend the Divine Liturgy. Also we pray that we could have a better attendance in our parish. Christmas Eve and Christmas day was very sparse and we have such a beautiful Church. Where is everyone???

Of course it was plenty for the doll. He softly said, “Thank you Jesus for giving me enough money.” Then the boy said “I just asked Jesus to give me enough money to buy this doll so Momma can take it with her to give to my sister.” “And he heard my ask him, but he gave me enough to buy the doll and a rose for my Momma.” “She loves white roses so very much”.
In a few minutes the aunt came back and I wheeled my cart away. I could not keep from thinking about the little boy as I finished my shopping in a totally different spirit than when I had started. And I kept remembering a story I had seen in the newspaper several days earlier about a drunk driver hitting a car and killing a little girl and the Mother was in serious condition. The family was deciding on rather to remove the life support. Now surely this little boy did not belong with that story.
Two days later I read in the paper where the family had disconnected the life support and the young woman had died. I could not forget the little boy and just kept wondering if the two were somehow connected. Later that day, I could not help myself and I went out and bought some white roses and took them to the funeral home where the young woman was. And there she was holding a lovely white rose, the beautiful doll, and the picture of the little boy in the store.
I left there in tears, my life changed forever. The love that little boy had for his little sister and his mother was overwhelming. And in a split second a drunk driver had ripped the life of that little boy to pieces. “We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give.”

THE FEAST OF THE CONCEPTION OF ST. ANNA
December 8
The feast of the Conception of St. Ann in ancient times was known by several different names. One of the oldest is “The Annunciation of the Conception of the Holy Mother of God”. In the constitution of feasts, Emperor Manuel Comnen calls this feast the “Conception of our Most Holy Mother of God.” The Slavonic Typicons generally refer to it as the “Conception of Blessed Ann” or “The Conception of Holy Ann, when she conceived the Most Holy Mother of God.”
In our Ukrainian Catholic Church the Synod of Lviv gave this feast the official title “The Immaculate Conception of the Most Pure Virgin Mary”. However, the Roman revision of our liturgical books restored the pristine title of the feast – “The Conception of Holy Anna, when she conceived the Most Holy Mother of God.”
Her parents rejoice over the wonderful conception of the Most Holy Mother of God; the prophets rejoice; heaven and earth rejoice. The Church calls upon the Old and New Testaments to join in the rejoicing: “Come, people of all classes and ages, let us celebrate with the Angels the all-glorious conception of the Mother of God; patriarchs sing praises to the Mother of the King of all; you, prophets, praise her whom you preached; you, forefathers, praise your descendant – the Mother of God; you aged, praise the ancestor of God; you, faithful, praise the root of your faith; you, priests, praise the all-holy temple of God; you, choirs of saints, praise the cause of your assembly; you, armies of angels, praise the Mother of the Lord of all creation, and Savior of our souls.
Today we celebrate her immaculate conception whereas nine months later on the 8th of September she appears among us in her glorious Nativity.

PYROHY PROJECT: Many thanks to all our faithful workers who came out to help with the Pyrohy project. Close to 400 dozen was made and sold. This project requires a lot of work but thank God we have people who come out to lend a hand, especially the people who do not even belong to the parish. We appreciated all the help that was needed.

CHRISTMAS PARTY: Santa will pay a visit to the Women’s Society of the Parish who will hold their annual Christmas Party in the Parish Hall this Sunday at 1:00 PM.

MALANKA: Northeastern Pennsylvania’s 10th Annual MALANKA is scheduled for Saturday evening, January 11, 2014 from 6:00pm to 1:00am at St. Vladimir Parish Center, 728 North Seventh Avenue, Scranton.
The festive evening will include a generous Ukrainian and American dinner buffet catered by Paul Wanas of Accentuate Caterers, cash bar, complimentary bubbly toast and dancing to the internationally known Ukrainian orchestra “Fata Morgana”. Door prizes will be awarded along with special awards for the lady and gentleman wearing the most attractive Ukrainian embroidered apparel. The Feast Day of St. Andrew
November 30
Andrew, like his brother Simon Peter, was a fisherman. He became a disciple of the great St. John the Baptist, but when John pointed to Jesus and said, “Behold the Lamb of God!” Andrew understood that Jesus was greater. At once he left John to follow the Divine Master. Jesus knew that Andrew was walking behind him, and turning back, he asked, “What do you seek?” When Andrew answered that he would like to know where Jesus lived, Our Lord replied, “Come and see.” Andrew had been only a little time with Jesus when he realized that this was truly the Messiah.
From then on, he chose to follow Jesus. Andrew was thus the first disciple of Christ. Next, Andrew brought his brother Simon (St. Peter) to Jesus and Jesus received him, too, as His disciple. At first the two brothers continued to carry on their fishing trade and family affairs, but later, the Lord called them to stay with Him all the time. He promised to make them fishers of men, and this time, they left their nets for good. It is believed that after Our Lord ascended into Heaven, St. Andrew went to Greece to preach the gospel. It is said he was put to death on a cross, to which he was tied, not nailed. He lived two days in that state of suffering, still preaching to the people who gathered around their beloved Apostle. Two countries have chosen St. Andrew as their patron – Russia and Scotland.

THE SHROUD OF TURIN: The meeting for the preparation of receiving the Shroud in March, 2014 was held on Monday evening. The discussion on the printing of pamphlets and posters were the main subject. Publicity is very important for this special occasion. When you are speaking to your friends and relatives please mention the dates (March 2 to the 15, 2014) for visitation
to our church at this time. A schedule of days and times will be announced.

The Presentation of the Most Holy Mother of God in the Temple
November 21st

The festivals of the Most Holy Mother of God occupy first place in our Church calendar after the feasts of our Lord. The chief aim of the Marian feast is to set before us the majesty, dignity and the holiness of the Most Pure Virgin Mary, and her role in the redemption of the human race, so that we may be inspired to venerate and imitate her. The greatest Marian feasts, such as her Nativity and Dormition, speak to us either of the very first moments of her existence on earth or of her departure into eternity. The only feast that has for its theme the childhood and youthful years of the Mother of God is the feast of the Presentation in the Temple, which we celebrate on the 21st of November. In our Church services this feast has the name: “The Entry into the Temple of the Most Holy Queen, Mother of God and ever-Virgin Mary”. The purpose of this feast is to remove the veil of certain mysteries from the childhood and youthful years of the Blessed Mother, and to throw some light on the mystery of her parents, her training in the temple, and her preparation for the supreme dignity of being the Mother of God.
We learn that the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary, SS. Joachim and Anna, being childless, had made a promise that, if they were blessed with a child, they would offer that child up to the service of the Lord in the temple in Jerusalem. The Lord God heard their prayers and blessed them with a daughter. When the little one was three years old, her parents brought her to the temple and placed her under the care of the high priest Zachary, the father of St. John the Baptist. Here the Most Holy Mother of God spent many years until, as a mature maiden, she was betrothed to St. Joseph.

PROVIDENCE ASSOCIATION: Sunday, Dec. 1st Eugene A. Luciw, J.D., Director of Sales and Marketing with the Providence Association of the Ukrainian Catholics in America, will visit Transfiguration of Our Lord Parish during the social hour in Nanticoke after the 10:30 AM Divine Liturgy. Mr. Luciw will give a brief presentation about Providence, its mission our Church and community, life insurance, family protection, annuity, IRA, pension, education and other savings programs. All are invited and encouraged to attend. Mr. Luciw will be available for your questions and inquiries. Email is eluciw@provassn.com.

The Preparatory Season for the Nativity of Our Lord – The Phillipian Fast– Phillip’s Fast, Nativity Fast, Byzantine Advent – terms designating the 40 day preparation period before the Christmas / Theophany season. It begins at sundown on November 14th (when the Church begins a new day) and concludes at Christmas. Please remember to– Pray, Fast, live well, no dancing or partying and give alms during this time.
Gods Days
There are two days in the week upon which and about which I never worry — two carefree days kept sacredly free from fear and apprehension. One of these days is Yesterday. Yesterday, with its cares and frets and pains and aches, all its faults, its mistakes and blunders, has passed forever beyond my recall. It was mine; it is God’s.
The other day that I do not worry about is Tomorrow. Tomorrow, with all its possible adversities, its burdens, its perils, its large promise and performance, its failures and mistakes, is as far beyond my mastery as its dead sister, Yesterday. Tomorrow is God’s day; it will be mine.
There is left, then, for myself but one day in the week – Today. Any man can fight the battles of today. Any woman can carry the burdens of just one day; any man can resist the temptation of today. It is only when we willfully add the burdens of these two awful eternities – Yesterday and Tomorrow – such burdens as only the Mighty God can sustain – that we break down.
It isn’t the experience of Today that drives men mad.
It is the remorse of what happened Yesterday
and fear of what Tomorrow might bring.
These are God’s Days … Leave them to Him.

Therefore, seize Today. Use what you have learned from Yesterday, remember what you hope for Tomorrow,
and make Today the best possible day.
Today only comes once.

MEETING: A meeting for the preparation of the Shroud of Turin will be held this Monday, November 18th in the Church Hall at 6:00 PM. All parishioners are urged to attend this meeting. With everyone’s cooperation in this special event we can make our parish something to be proud to present. Come and voice your opinion as to what this spiritual presentation can be in our Parish.

BIRTHDAY GREETINGS: We wish to extend our Best Wishes to Anna Bosack who celebrated her 91st Birthday on Thursday, November 14th and to Helen Youelles who will celebrate her 94th Birthday on November 29th. Many more Happy, Healthy Years. Mnohya Lita!

CHRISTMAS PARTY: Our Women’s Society will celebrate their annual Christmas Party this Sunday, Dec. 8rd in the Church Hall, 1:00 PM. Dinner served at 1:30 PM.

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.
Solemn the drums thrill. Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres.
There is a music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle; they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds encountered.
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning

Veterans Day is intended to honor and thank all military personnel who served the United States in all wars, particularly living veterans.
It is marked by parades and church services and in many places the American flag is hung at half-mast.
A period of silence lasting two minutes may be held at 11:00 AM.

~Veteran’s Day Prayer~
A prayer solemn, We offer today;
It is for Veterans, We now pray.
Selfless, sacrificial, Risking death gallantly
Soldiers do all this, To ensure we are free.
So many have died, There on the battleground;
No music then to comfort, Simply gun blasts all around.
So many names and faces, That I will never know;
So many stories of bravery, In warring winds did blow.
Grateful am I to these, Men and Women brave –
To think of all they did, All they risked, all they gave.
Extend this heartfelt prayer, I will, to reach their ears;
How treasured they are to me, Marching onward despite fears.
And for those who have passed, May God bless them lavishly
These very ones who died, So that we would live free.
In the stories of Veterans, We see a shadow of the Cross
Christ died to set us free, Our gain was through His loss.
