ASK FATHER A QUESTION? What would we do on Sunday if a priest is unavailable for Liturgy? The service you would do is called “Typika.” It’s a brief service for occasions that can be conducted when there is no priest or bishop present. It includes elements of the Divine Liturgy that can be led by a layman. The Holy Doors stay closed on the iconostas- the prayers are said from the nave. There is no communion- because none has been consecrated and there is no minister for distributing communion since no priest is present.
