This Sunday reminds us of the first universal Council assembled at Nicea in 325. The Council was convened by the first Christian Emperor Constantine the Great and the sanction of Pope Sylvester I. 318 Bishops, mostly Eastern, under the presidency of Hosius and two Roman priests, legates of the Holy See, took part in the council.
The Holy Fathers of the Church are the eminent preachers, writers and defenders of the Faith distinguished by the following three characteristics: Personal sanctity, correctness (Orthodoxy) of their teaching in all their writings, sermons, and antiquity.
The most prominent Fathers of the Eastern Church are: St. Irenaeus, St. Athanasius, St. Cyril of Alexandria, St. John Chrysostom and St. Ephrem. The Church commemorates the remembrance of these valiant defenders of the faith to remind her faithful of their duty to defend the treasure or their faith against any possible attack and to live according to its maxims and principles.
