Pray the Rosary

THE DAILY ROSARY

The Rosary is an easy form of prayer, at the same time a most excellent prayer because it is composed of the Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Glory be to the Father. Besides these beautiful and sublime prayers, which compose the Rosary, a short meditation – which constitutes the soul of the Rosary – is added before or during each decade. The Rosary is a most beautiful flower that, in the course of the centuries, sprang forth from the devotion to the great Mother of Our Savior. This prayer is now the most popular among the Children of Mary. In the past it has proved a powerful weapon against heresies, as instrument of social reform, and a form of petition most acceptable to God.

The doctrinal content of the mysteries contemplated in the recital of the Rosary is very important. Jesus and Mary dominate the chain of events. They are central persons in each mystery. They were united in the Incarnation, and now are together in eternal life.

By contemplating the mysteries of our faith, we are incited to imitate Jesus and Mary, and the Rosary becomes an important school of Christian perfection because it focuses our lives on the two who are most worthy of true imitation – the Son of God and His Most Pure Mother.

The Rosary is essentially a prayer of intercession to Our Lady. It is not Mariolatry because Jesus is not forgotten in its recital. Mary speaks to her Children when they say the Rosary. She speaks a language all can understand, for the Rosary is, outside the official Liturgy and other church services, the most widely used public prayer. It is not reserved to any class of people. Illiterate as well as learned men equally recite it. The Pope, Bishops, priests, religious and nuns say it.

Our Blessed Lady encouraged the recital of the Rosary on several occasions, especially during her apparitions at Lourdes, LaSalette, and Fatima. The Rosary is a powerful means of subjugating evil, salvation, a source of consolation, a guarantee of forgiveness of our sins, a powerful defense against temptations, a spiritual mine of innumerable blessings and supernatural benefits and a great means of honoring the Mother of Perpetual Help. The Saints say that we place a beautiful crown on the forehead of our heavenly Queen when we recite the Rosary. It is, therefore, no wonder, that the Blessed Virgin Mary is so generous to those who honor her with the daily Rosary.

The Church granted a five-year indulgence for the recitation of the Rosary; if said with others, ten years. The Church enriched the Rosary with so many indulgences to encourage the faithful to recite it and to make it their daily prayer in honor of the Mother of God.

TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD

Saturday Liturgy is 6:00 PM ~ Sunday Liturgy is 10:30 AM

The Origins of Labor Day
The first observance of Labor Day is believed to have been a parade of 10,000 workers on Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City, organized by Peter J. McGuire, a Carpenters and Joiners Union secretary. By 1893, more than half the states were observing “Labor Day” on one day or another, and Congress passed a bill to establish a federal holiday in 1894. President Grover Cleveland signed the bill soon afterward, designating the first Monday in September as Labor Day.

Enjoy your Labor Day…..

THE NATIVITY OF THE MOST HOLY MOTHER OF GOD

One of the great feast days we celebrate

at the beginning of the Liturgical Year is the fest of the Nativity of the most Holy Mother of God (Theotokos). This Feast is a joyful and significant feast day. It is joyful because it is the birthday of the Mother of God, the Queen of Heaven and earth. It is significant because it places before our eyes the great truth of our holy faith concerning the Divine Motherhood of the most Pure Virgin Mary, from whom “shone forth the Sun of Justice, Christ our God.”

The Gospel records very few incidents in the life of the most Pure Virgin Mary. It says nothing about her nativity, her parentage, her childhood or youth, or her holy assumption into heaven.

The chief source of information on the life of the most Holy Mother of God is the Apocryphal book written around the year 170-180 called Proto-evangelium of James. This book presented the basis for the institution of such feasts as the Conception of St. Anna, the Nativity of the most Holy Mother of God, the Presentation in the Temple, and the feasts honoring Joachim and Anna, the parents of Mary.

In the Proto-evangelium of James we learn that the most Pure Virgin Mary was descended on her father’s side from the royal house of David, and on her mother’s side from the priestly line of Aaron. Her parents lived in Nazareth and were fairly well off. They were also distinguished for the great holiness of their lives and their great love of God and neighbor. Joachim was accustomed to dividing the fruits of his labor into three parts; one part he gave to God as sacrifice, the second part he distributed among the poor, and the third part he kept for himself. Their one great sorrow was that they had no children. Among the Jews, childlessness was looked upon not only as an absence of God’s blessing, but as a punishment from God. Joachim and Anna had to suffer much. Therefore, it is not surprising that they should unceasingly implore God for a child. This was the main purpose of all their prayers, fasting, and alms. Finally, the Lord God blessed them in their old age with a child who was destined to become the Mother of God.

The birth of Mary was a singular source of joy for her parents – Joachim and Anna, for heaven, for earth, and for all creations. Various Fathers of the Church have stressed the spiritual joy occasioned by this feast of the Nativity of the Mother of God.

Yesterday is history,

today is a gift of God,

 St. John the Baptist

               August 29

May our Lord bless you through theintercessions

of the glorious prophet and forerunner,

BEHEADING OF SAINT JOHN,

THE PROPET, THE PRECURSOR AND BAPTIST

Saint John the Baptist was the precursor of Christ, whom Christ called “thegreatest of thesonsof women.” He was the last of the prophets sent by God to the people of Israel to prepare them for the coming of the Messias. Saint John preached penance on the shores of the river Jordan in Palestine. During his time a great scandal occurred in Palestine. Herod Antipas, tetrarch (a subordinate prince or king) of Galilee and Perea took Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, and married her. While the “austere” Pharisees did not dare to condemn their ruler, St. John the Baptist went to the royal palace and courageously condemned the tetrarch’s incestuous union with Herodias.

Herod instigated by Herodias cast John into prison. Although Herodias would have him killed, Herod refused to shed his blood partly for fear of the people and partly out of reverence for the saintly preacher.

On the birthday of Herod the opportunity was given to Herodios to wreak her vengeance on the preacher. It was a great festival with numerous guests, dancing, music, etc. Herodias’ daughter by Philip, Salome, danced before the tetrarch and his company. Herod promised to give her whatever she might ask. At the prompting of her mother, Salome requested the head of Saint John, Herod through a false sense of honor for his promise ordered his guards that John be beheaded. Thus the girl took the head of the Saint to her revengeful mother.

DEVELOP THE HABIT: We ought, therefore, to try to acquire the habit of saying JESUS, JESUS, JESUS, very often every day, with fervent love and devotion – when dressing, when working – no matter what we are doing, in moments of sadness and in moments of joy, at home, in company, on the street, when walking, riding, or waiting.

We can say it countless times every day, and thus gain untold graces and blessings for ourselves and for the whole world. Nothing is easier, if only we do it with all our heart. The only thing we have to do is form the habit of constantly saying JESUS.

and sprinkling it liberally with love and kindness.

The Dormition (Assumption) of the Blessed Virgin Mary

AUGUST 15TH

This feast commemorates the happy death of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Her death was so calm and free from pains and remorse’s that it seemed to be a “sleep.”

It is an article of faith that the Blessed Mother of our Savior was taken body, and soul, into heaven after her death. Although the Blessed Virgin really died and her soul was separated from her body, her body laid in a tomb.  When Thomas came to see where she was laid, the tomb was empty except for the funeral wrappings, flowers and spices, the aroma of roses ever fragrant. Thus The Church believes the Blessed Virgin entered heaven with a glorified body and soul.

It is a matter of dispute whether our Lady died at Jerusalem or Ephesus where she lived with Saint John. Two cities claim to be the place of her departure. Since the feast of the “Assumption” or “Falling Asleep” of our Lady had been kept in Ephesus even in the first century, it is probable that the Mother of God completed her earthly life in that city of Asia Minor.

Neither do we know how many years after Christ’s death the Blessed Virgin remained on earth. Some writers affirm that she died at the age of seventy-two, that is, twenty two years after our Lord’s death.

The feast itself was introduced in the second or third century, for Pope Gelasius I (492-496), calls it very old in one of his letters. In the fifth century it spread to the whole Church.

After the Divine Liturgy the priest blesses the flowers, which the people bring to the church. After the sprinkling and blessing they take them home, using them in various ways as a blessed thing.
