The Feast of St. Nicholas

The feast of St. Nicholas is celebrated on the 6th day of December.
Pope Nicholas, the first Pope bearing this name – erected a church in Rome in honor of St. Nicholas around the year 860. The Latin Church also celebrates the feast of St. Nicholas on the 6th of December. In France and Germany over two thousand churches are dedicated to his name; an additional four hundred such churches are found in England.
The cult of St. Nicholas came to our native Ukraine along with the Christian faith. There were numerous churches in honor of St. Nicholas. The Church of St. Nicholas in Lviv, which dates back to the thirteenth century, is one of the oldest. Our Ukrainian Encyclopedia says the following about the veneration of St. Nicholas among our people: “In a great number of oral traditions, Nicholas protects people from disasters caused by the elements; mostly he protects those who sail on the sea. Hence, the Black Sea fishermen, when going out to fish, take the icon of St. Nicholas with them. Songs about St. Nicholas are among the earliest examples of Ukrainian poetry and include such popular ones as “O Whoever, whoever loves St. Nicholas…”
In our Church, St. Nicholas not only has two separate feasts in his honor, but ever Thursday is also dedicated to his name.
We do not know very much about the life of St. Nicholas, and what we do know is somewhat embellished with various legends. We know for certain that St. Nicholas was a bishop for many years in Myra, a city in the province of Lycia, in Asia Minor; that he took part in the First Ecumenical Council in 325 at Nicea; and that he died around the year 345. His whole life was dedicated to works of mercy, both corporal and spiritual. Even during his lifetime he was called the father of orphans, widows, and the poor. After his death, the Lord glorified him with the gift or working miracles, for which he received the title “Great Wonder-worker”.
St. Nicholas saw Jesus Christ in his neighbor and that is why he quickly and generously hastened to help him in every need. The Holy Gospel says that at the Last Judgment the Lord will judge us by our works of love and mercy. Christ assures us of this when He says: “Amen I say to you, as long as you did it for one of these, the least of My brethren, you did it for Me”.
Nicholas’ tomb in Myra became a popular place of pilgrimage. Because of the many wars and attacks in the region by Muslims, some Christians were concerned that access to the tomb might become difficult. For both the religious and commercial advantages of a major pilgrimage site, the Italian cities of Venice and Bari vied to get the Nicholas relics. http://www.stnicholascenter.org/pages/who-is-st-nicholas/

BUS TRIP: Scranton’s St. Vladimir Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church is sponsoring a Christmastime bus trip to New York City on Saturday, December 9, 2017. There will be three stops in Manhattan: the Ukrainian Village on the lower East Side, Bryant Park’s Winter Village housing 125 vendors in midtown, and the Christmassy Fifth Avenue area. We’ll have an opportunity to buy some tasty Ukrainian goodies, see many beautiful Christmas decorations as only New York City can do it including the famous Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center and more. Participants can follow the above three-stop itinerary or are free to do their own thing for part or all of the day. Saint Michael, captain of all Angels

Saint Michael (Michael means ‘Who is like God’) is the leader of the heavenly hosts and the greatest adversary of Satan. Under his leadership the faithful Angels defeated Lucifer, the chieftain of the rebellious angels. This feast was instituted at the time of Emperor Constantine the Great in the fourth century.
Saint Michael became patron of Kiev. Capital of Ukraine, since the early days of Christianity in our country.
The Church honors all the angelic choirs on the same day, when it pays a tribute of honor to their leader, St. Michael.

“You the Marshals of the heavenly armies,
we implore, though being unworthy,
that with your prayers you fortify us,
under the shelter of your wings, 
of your spiritual glory,
guarding us as we fall before you,
and incessantly cry:
Redeem from dangers all of us, 
as the Commanders of the heavenly Powers.”

Saint Michael Archangel, defend us in battle,
be our protection against the wickedness
and snares of the devil;
may God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host,
by the power of God, cast into hell
Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl through the world
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

St. Michael the Archangel

Our Liturgical Year is like a beautiful mosaic made up of the feasts of Our Lord, the Mother of God, and an immense throng of Martyrs and Saints. The center of this splendid mosaic is our Lord Jesus Christ, as God and as Man. Day and night, His Pilgrim Church on earth and in heaven, the Church in glory, that is – the very great choir of Angels and Saints – sing to Him eternal praises. The holy Angels are God’s everlasting choir of glory; they are the messengers and servants of God. The Angels
also fulfill a great role in the redemption of the human race.
Holy Church, conscious of the great significance of the Angels for the glory of God and our salvation, has provided a special place for the veneration of the Angels in the mosaic of the Liturgical Year. Here, first place is given to the feast of the Synaxis of St. Michael the Archangel and the rest of the Angelic Powers.
Before the Lord God created man, He created the holy Angels who are invisible, immortal, perfect beings and pure spirits, possessing a keen intellect and free will. Their number is immeasurably great, as we know from the vision granted to the prophet Daniel who saw the throne of God where “thousands upon thousands were ministering Him, and myriads upon myriads attended Him.”
The Lord God, after creating the Angels, put them to a test and a great number of the Angels’ rebelled against Him. St. John the Theologian speaks of a war in heaven (Rev. 12,7). At the head of the good Angels stood the Archangel Michael who overcame Lucifer and his angels. Hence, in the veneration of the Angels, the holy Church gives first place to St. Michael.
The angels whose task is to protect men, we call guardian Angels. The Fathers of the Church teach that every person has his own guardian Angel. In the Petition of the Divine Liturgy we beg God for a guardian Angel: “For an angel of peace, a faithful guide, a guardian of our souls and bodies, let us beseech the Lord.” Using the Holy Scripture as their foundation, the Holy Fathers teach that not only every person, but also every community, Church, and nation has its own guardian Angel.
The feast of the Archangel Michael and the holy Angels indicates to us the significant role the Angels play in our salvation. This feast also reminds us of our duties towards the Angels, especially toward our Guardian Angel. Throughout our entire life, at every moment and in every place our guardian angel watches over us, protects us, inspires us with good thoughts, warns us against sin, and intercedes for us before God. Our Guardian Angel is our guide to heaven, our helper against temptation, and our companion at the hour of death. He is the constant witness of our thoughts, our words, and our deeds. Only in heaven will we one day see how much we owe to our Guardian Angel.

the Bells SHALL RING: The Carillon Bells of our Church are ringing again. The repaired parts that were sent to Ohio are back and Father Walter installed them with Dave Youells and they programmed the tolls. The cost of the repair is $1,967.00 and to date we have received two donations of $1000 and $116 by two anonymous donors. The balance is still outstanding and if you would like to contribute to this cause please do so by placing your donation in the collection basket or send it to the office. Your donations are certainly appreciated.

If you haven’t had the chance to visit the hall for the sale, it is still available Sunday. Come see the many nice items and you may find something you need. DIVINE LITURGY
On Sunday, October 8th at 9:30 AM, many visitors prayed in our parish as part of the Divine Liturgy which was celebrated in honor of the League of Ukrainian Catholics.  Many of the attendees who raved about how magnificent, moving and inspiring the Divine Liturgy was.  If you missed it, how can one describe what you missed???
If you were not in attendance, you certainly missed an inspiring time of prayer. Bishop Bura and all the clergy made this Liturgy special for us. The parishoners and the LUC offer thanks to those who served.

Founded in 1933, the work of the LUC has been to bring the faithful together in both spiritual and social activities throughout the parishes of the Metropolia. It has encouraged membership from all parishes within the four Eparchies and it has been the forerunner of the “Vibrant Parish” program. The current focus of the League is to combine our purposes with those of the “Vibrant Parish – a place to encounter the living Christ” program as initiated by our Patriarch, His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk, in his pastoral letter of December 2, 2011, looking towards the year 2020 and beyond, for a renewal of our church life, a transformation to a Vibrant Parish through: the Word of God, the Sacraments, Prayer, Serving One’s Neighbor, Leadership, Fostering Unity and a Missionary Spirit. It is through these components of the Pastoral letter that we can come to encounter the living Christ in our parishes and in our communities. Membership in the LUC is open to all Ukrainian Catholics.

Why do we have a procession with the LUC banners entering the church when Bishop John is visiting, and why do you not have the American, Ukrainian or Papal flags in the procession?
     It is about the meaning of the word; Sabaoth?  You see it on page 30 of the little black Divine Liturgy book, do you know what that word means?  It is not Sabbath, i.e. Saturday, it is pronounced sabāˌäTH and is a Hebrew word meaning: heavenly hosts, in other words, the angels in heaven.  In the Bible God is called “the Lord of Sabaoth” and that is why we pray this way.  
     God’s angels are His heavenly Army and Michael the Archangel [Archangel means he is the head of the legions of angels] is the General.  If we were to draw a parallel between the angels and a profession in this world we would call the angels the Army of God.  So what does a battalion, an army, carry before themselves?  They carry the banner of their division.  So the LUC members, indeed all of us true Christians, i.e. Catholics, enter into God’s domicile behind the banner of the Legion of God’s Army to which we belong.  We are that Heavenly Army here on Earth, trying to live as God intended for us to live.  Praying and loving our Creator the Lord of Sabaoth.   This is why no flag of a nation or of the Papal state is in this procession, because this is not a national thing and we are not Roman Catholics, we are the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in America.  The absence of said flags is not in disrespect for the nation we live in or the nation from which immigrants brought this church here from or the brother we are in a common union [communion] with; but rather, we are trying to find and live in that balance that recognizes The Church is about God and goes beyond mankind’s drawn boarders, because all of creation belongs to God our creator whom we wish to be reunited with for eternity, i.e. Heaven.  So we battle sin in this life as part of God’s visible army while we can.  That is why we process in to the church this way, like an army triumphant and the bishop represents and stands in place of Jesus Christ, our Lord, which is why he enters last, because the army precedes the King and leads Him to his throne

RUMMAGE – FLEA MARKET SALE: The Parish Women’s Society will be sponsoring a Rummage Sale this coming Friday & Saturday, October 13/14. The Sale will run on Friday, from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM and Saturday 9:00 AM –2:00 PM. The following weekend will be opened Friday, Oct. 20 – 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM, Sat. Oct. 21 – 9:00 AM –2:00 PM and Sun. Oct. 22 – 1:00 AM – 4:00 PM. Come and browse around, you may find a treasure. All are welcome…

WOMEN’S SOCIETY: The regular monthly meeting will we held this month on Wednesday, October 10th at the preparation of the Piggies. The project will begin at 10:00 AM and the meeting will be conducted in between the work. This is important because of the Rummage Sale that weekend.
