DORMITION OF THE MOST HOLY
MOTHER OF GOD

This feast commemorates the happy death of the Blessed Virgin May. Her death was so calm and free from pains and remorse that it seemed to be a “sleep.”
It is an article of faith that the Blessed Mother of our Savior was taken body and soul into heaven upon her death. Although the Blessed Virgin really died and her soul was separated from her body, the latte, however, was preserved from corruption and shortly afterwards was re united to her soul. Thus the Blessed Virgin entered heaven with a glorified body and soul.
We do not know how many years after Christ’s death the Blessed Virgin remained on earth. Some writers affirm that she died at the age of seventy two, that is, twenty two years after our Lord’s death.
The feast itself was introduced in the second or third century, for Pope Gelasius I (492-496) calls it very old in one of his letters. In the fifth century it spread to the whole Church.
We thank Michael Kane for his donation of flowers this week in honor of the Blessed Mothers Dormition.

TRANSFIGURATION OF
OUR LORD

Thursday. August 6th, we will celebrate the feast of our Lord’s Transfiguration. In His wisdom, Jesus planned this miracle at a very opportune time in His life, in order to strengthen His disciples, when the time of trial would come; they would remember the glory and majesty of His Transfiguration.
The relevance of the Transfiguration for us lies in the Divine Liturgy, for what once happened on Mount Tabor happens every time the Holy Sacrifice is offered. Christ, in fact, is transfigured on our altars. Under the appearances of bread and wine, the eyes of faith can see the glorified Christ. The Holy Eucharist is the sacrament of transfiguration. But, the Liturgy goes even further: it not only reveals Christ transfigured but allows us to share His glory intimately.
When Our Lord was transfigured, two Old Testament figures appeared with Him as witnesses to His glory. Christ was the fulfillment of the Old Law and the prophecies so that Moses, the representative of the Old Law and Elias, the representative of the Prophets, appeared with Our Lord who established the New Covenant between God and His chosen people.
So much emphasis today is placed on the humanity of Christ. The feast of the Transfiguration serves to remind us of His divinity. Christ is the Son of God

who transformed all creation by His passion, and the light of His glory has made the whole universe sharply aware of the holiness of God. The living Christ on the high mountain of Tabor, shining as the sun, was the Son of God. That same Son of God in His life on earth among us had more humiliations than moments of glory. His transfiguration should underling for us the mysterious meaning of life, namely, that joy follows Good Friday and heaven follows sufferings that are patiently endured.
No life can have much meaning that is devoid of an understanding of joy and suffering. Wednesday’s feast day underlines a great moment of joy in the love of our Lord that supported His disciples when they saw Him humiliated and put to great shame. The transfiguration is a promise of future glory that can only be merited by leading a good life and helping others to do so too. If we are loyal to the mysteries of our Catholic faith and uphold its truth, then the immeasurable reward of transfiguration will be ours, too.

What is happening to our parish????
The attendance has been so down, Saturday Divine Liturgy averages about 30-35 attending and Sunday 12-16. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how we can heal this situation and become more alive? If you wish to make suggestions please do so by placing them in the collection basket, contacting the priest or the office. You are the Parish, it is your church – see what we can do to better the way.

WHAT IS THE UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC CHURCH?
The Ukrainian Catholic Church has the following attributes:
It is in full communion with the Holy See
It is an Eastern Catholic Church, following the traditions passed on from the Church in Constantinople
It has over 5 million members worldwide
It is the largest Eastern Catholic Church in communion with Rome
It has its own hierarchy (bishops, cardinal) that are subject to the leadership of
the Holy Father in Rome.
Although Christianity was officially recognized as the “state religion” in Ukraine in 988 AD, St. Andrew, the first apostle of Christ, preached in the hills presently known as Kiev around 50 AD.
St. Olga accepted Christianity in 945 and was baptized by the Patriarch of Constantinople. Her grandson, St. Vladimir the Great, Prince of Kievan Rus, accepted Christianity from Constantinople in 988 and proclaimed it the “state religion”.
Thus, religion in Ukraine was rooted in Eastern theology and liturgical traditions. Also, St. Cyril and St. Methodius, Apostles of the Slavs, were responsible for introducing the Cyrillic alphabet.
It is interesting to note that Ukraine, through the efforts of Prince Yaroslav the Wise during the 11th century, became the first European nation to be consecrated to the protection of the Mother of God – Pokrov.
During the “Great Schism” of 1054, Pope Leo XI of Rome and Patriarch Michael of Constantinople excommunicated each other. The Ukrainian Church thus, over time, became separated from the Holy See in Rome.
However, the Union of Brest, in 1596, brought the Ukrainian Catholics back in full union with Rome. The Ukrainian Church was allowed to keep its customs and was given full autonomy as a “Particular” Church within the Byzantine rite.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA!
On July 4th, 1776
This great nation, the United States of America,
In a struggle for what was right and free,
Was proudly born…
May we celebrate that precious freedom
For which our forbears fought so bravely…
The freedom that is inherent
In the Stars and Stripes, our revered flag…
Celebrate Freedom
This Fourth of July! correctly folding the American flag 13 times?
I’ve known how the 21 gun salute was determined (adding the individual digits of 1776), but only recently learned why the flag was folded 13 times when it is lowered or when it is folded and handed to the widow at the burial of a veteran.
HERE IT IS: The first fold of our flag is a symbol of life.
The second fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life.
The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing our ranks who gave a portion of their lives for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world.
The fourth fold represents our weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in time of war for His divine guidance.
The fifth fold is a tribute to our country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, “Our Country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right; but it is still our country, right or wrong.”
The sixth fold is for where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States Of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.
The seventh fold is a tribute to our Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that we protect our country and our flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic.
The eighth fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day, and to honor mother, for whom it flies on Mother’s Day.
The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood; for it has been through their faith, their love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great has been molded.
The tenth fold is a tribute to the father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since they were first born.
The eleventh fold, in the eyes of a Hebrew citizen represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon, and glorifies in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
The twelfth fold, in the eyes of a Christian citizen, represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in their eyes, God the Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit.
When the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost reminding us of our nation’s motto, “In God We Trust”. After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington, and the sailors and marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for us the rights, privileges, and freedoms we enjoy today. There are some traditions and ways of doing things which have deep meaning. You will see many flags folded in the coming weeks, and now you will know why.

Statue of Liberty
In New York Harbor stands a lady On lonely Golgotha stood a cross,
With a torch raised to the sky; With my Lord raised to the sky;
And all who see her know she stands for And all who kneel there live forever,
Liberty for you and I. As all the saved can testify
I’m so proud to be an American, I’m so glad to be called a Christian,
To be named with the brave and the free. To be named with the ransomed
I will honor the flag and our trust in God, And whole.
And the Statue of. Liberty As the Statue liberates the citizen,
So the Cross liberates the soul.

Oh, the Cross is my Statue of Liberty,
It was there that my soul was set free.
Unashamed I’ll proclaim that a rugged cross
Is my Statue of Liberty.
The secret to peace with God is to discover, accept, and appreciate God’s perfect timing.

A FATHER’S ROLE

The essence of the father’s role
Is to mirror God’s own heart
And to value instruction in God’s ways
With the grace that God imparts

Every father needs God’s wisdom
To carry out his role
As the tower of strength and support,
For each fragile heart he holds
And there’s no greater reward in life
For a father to take his place
And uphold the values of the Lord
With integrity and grace.

MY FATHER’S DAY PRAYER
May God’s blessings be on you
In everything you do
In your going out and coming in,
May His presence be with you
For you have shown me the way
And taught me by God’s wisdom,
So Dad, today, I will return
The love you’ve freely given.
For our dearly departed Fathers
Lord, Grant them peace!

O Lord, give eternal rest in a blessed repose to the souls of Your departed servants, Whom we commemorate, and make their memory to be eternal.

Requested by an
Anonymous Veteran Father

Father’s Day Honors to all
Fathers of Unknown Airmen, Coasties, Marines, Sailors,
and Soldiers interned on Land or in the Seas throughout this world!
Dear Father Up in Heaven
Watch over our soldiers who fight
For they are fighting for you Father
For the difference in wrong and right

Protect them dear Father
And mend their scars and hearts
For they are far from home dear Father
And their families are torn in parts

Watch over their families, dear Father
Keep those children from all harm
For it’s the children who suffer, Father
When they fall under satins evil charm

We’ll try and watch for satin dear Father
So our hearts won’t let him in
And try our best, dear Father
To shun away from his sins

I pray for the women, dear Father
Raising their kids all alone
never knowing, dear Father
If their husbands will make it home
This prayer I pray to you, dear Father
It’s this prayer I shall pray again
Until the wars are all over
And there is love among all men
HAPPY FATHER’S DAY TO ALL OUR FATHERS

PARISHIONERS ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND
Metropolitan Stefan has decided to convey the “Summary” and “Report” of the 2014 Sobor onto the deanery level by means of a series of meetings in each of the six deaneries of the Archeparchy.  Our Deanery has chosen Thursday, June 18th, for the meeting and thanks to the gracious cooperation of Fr. Paul it will be held at St. Vladimir Parish Hall in Edwardsville from 6:30pm-8:30pm.  Light refreshments will be served. The meeting will be conducted by Chancery staff with the possible attendance of the Metropolitan. The deanery Fathers, pastoral and finance council members, Sobor delegates and any and all interested parishioners are asked and encouraged to attend.  The deanery encourages these individuals to attend so that we will have a good representation at the meeting.  There should be no observers from outside our parishes.
The purpose is to facilitate the implementation of the conclusions of the Sobor in each deanery and to mitigate the often heard criticism that nothing is done after the Sobor.  It is important for all participants to be familiar with the “Summary” and ” Report” and conclusions of the Sobor which were distributed to all of us at the recent clergy conference.

THE FEAST OF THE MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS
The feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was adopted by the Syrian, Maronite, Chaldean, Armenian, Melchite, and Italo-Greek Catholics of the Eastern Church. The revision of our liturgical books conducted by the Holy See in the 1940’s retained the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in our breviary under the name “The Feast of the Most Sweet Lord and God our Savior Jesus Christ, Lover of Mankind.”
In his promises given to St. Margaret Alacoque, Jesus Christ promised the veneration of his Sacred Heart the necessary graces for their state of life; peace in their families; consolation in their pains and trials; assured refuge in life, and especially the grace of a happy death. Millions of souls throughout the world have found peace and happiness, growth in love, and the practice of Christian virtues in the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
A characteristic mark of love is to sacrifice oneself for the beloved and strive to repay love for love. Such was the love of our Savior: “We love God, for he has first loved us,” says St. John in his first letter.
In the encyclical of June 28, 1889 – where he encourages all to embrace the cult of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Pope Leo Xlll writes: “The most fervent desire of our Savior is to see the fire of love with which his heart burns being born and growing in the souls of the faithful. Therefore, let us go to him for he asks of us nothing more than that we repay him love for love.”

Saying the Jesus Prayer
The classical form of the Jesus Prayer is,
“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner
