November 30th
Feast Day of Saint Andrew
Andrew was just a poor fisherman in Galilee.
He had a brother whose name was Simon Peter.
One day he heard a great preacher, John the Baptist.
He left his boat and fishing nets, and followed John.
And john said, “Someone is coming who is greater than I.”
So when Jesu came, Andrew left John to follow Jesus.
He ran and told Simon Peter. Peter went to Jesus too.
Andrew was the Apostle who found the little boy with the loaves and fishes. Our dear Lord used these to feed thousands of people.
That was a great miracle.
Jesus made Andrew one of His first Bishops.
“Go teach everyone the Good New,” Jesus said. So after the Ascension of our Lord into heaven, Andrew went to Greece.
Some listed and became Christians. But some hated Andrew because they hated Jesus. So they nailed Andrew to a cross. Andrew sang with joy because, like Jesus, he could die on the Cross. He hung for two days on the Cross telling everyone about Jesus. Then he went gloriously to heaven. His Feast if November 30th.

The Presentation of the Most Holy Mother Of God in the Temple
We learn that the parents of the Blessed Virgin
Mary, SS. Joachim and Anna being childless, had made
a promise that, if they were blessed with a child,
they would offer that child up to the service of the Lord
in the temple in Jerusalem.
The Lord God heard their prayers and blessed them
with a daughter. When the little one was three years old,
her parents brought her to the temple and placed her
under the care of the high priest Zachary, the father of
St. John the Baptist. Here the Most Holy Mother of God spent many years until, as a mature maiden, she was betrothed to St. Joseph.
What does the feast of the Entrance convey to us? What spiritual lesson does it offer us? First of all, it speaks to us of the joyful sacrifice of Joachim and Anna. They themselves bring their daughter to the Temple and offer her to the service of God. But not only do the parents joyfully bring their child to offer her to the service of God; Mary also gladly obeys the voice of God and of her parents. Like Joachim and Anna, Mary too is a very beautiful example for us of joyful sacrifice and service to God.
A sign of deep piety of a nation is not only its magnificent and numerous churches and monasteries but, above all, its numerous vocations – its priests, missionaries and nuns. The most beautiful churches and gilded altars will be of no help to us if we do not have priests to offer the Unbloody Sacrifice, administer the Holy Sacraments, and preach the word of God in those churches. The lack of religious vocations among a people must lead to a gradual dying of the Church and of the spiritual life of its faithful, for the religious state is the heart and soul of the Church.
To a very great degree, the future of our Church and nation depends upon how our Ukrainian parents educate their children. We need parents who, following the example of SS Joachim and Anna, would gladly offer their children as a “burnt” offering to God, their Church and their nation. We need youth with ideals, who like the model of the Most Pure Virgin Mary, would gladly follow the voice of God and dedicate themselves to the service of God, the Church and the nation. Only then will we be able to look forward to a brighter and happier future for our Church and our nation

VETERAN’S DAY November 11th
Honoring all who served

On Veterans Day, we pay tribute to the service and sacrifice of
the men and women who in defense of our freedom have bravely worn the uniform of the United States. From the fields and forests of war-torn Europe to the jungles of Southeast Asia, from the deserts of Iraq to the mountains of Afghanistan, brave patriots have protected our Nation’s ideals, rescued millions from tyranny, and helped spread freedom around the globe. America’s veterans answered the call when asked to protect our Nation from some of the most brutal and ruthless tyrants, terrorists, and militaries the world has ever known. They stood tall in the face of grave danger and enabled our Nation to become the greatest force for freedom in human history. Members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard have answered a high calling to serve and have helped secure America at every turn.
Our country is forever indebted to our veterans for their quiet courage and exemplary service. We also remember and honor those who laid down their lives in freedom’s defense. These brave men and women made the ultimate sacrifice for our benefit. On Veterans Day, we remember these heroes for their valor, their loyalty, and their dedication. Their selfless sacrifices continue to inspire us today as we work to advance peace and extend freedom around the world. God Bless our Veterans

ST. JOSAPHAT
NOV. 12
The feast of St. Josaphat, Priest-martyr, is especially dear, glorious and joyful for the faithful of the Ukrainian Catholic Church because it is a feast of our own Ukrainian Saint, our brother who is of our own flesh and bone; it is the feast of a great Apostle and Martyr for the holy faith and the unity of the Churches.
Not only our own Ukrainian Catholic Church, but the entire Catholic Church venerates, praises, and prays to St. Josaphat and erects churches in his honor. His relics are enshrined in the center of the Catholic world – in the Basilica of the Apostle St. Pater in Rome. St. Josaphat is the first Ukrainian Saint ever to be canonized by the Catholic Church. It is due to him and to his martyrdom that today we profess the true Christian faith and are members of the true Church of Christ.

The Feast Day of
SAINT MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL

The Feast of the Archangel Michael and the holy Angels indicates to us the significant role the Angels play in our salvation. This feast also reminds up of our duties towards the Angels, especially toward our Guardian Angel. Throughout our entire life, at every moment and in every place our guardian angel watches over us, protects us, inspires us with good thoughts, warns us against sin, and intercedes for us before God. Our Guardian Angel is our guide to heaven, our helper against temptation, our companion at the hour of death. He is the constant witness of our thoughts, our words, and our deeds. Only in heaven will we one day see how much we owe to our Guardian Angel. From this comes our duty to venerate the holy Angels, to praise them and to thank them every day for their assistance and protection.
Devotion to our own Guardian Angel is pleasing to him, not only when we venerate and pray to him, but above all, when we imitate him. He gives us a beautiful example of holiness. He teaches us by his example how to love God, how to serve him and glorify him. Therefore let us strive to love God as our Angel loves him, with greater fervor, and zealously carry out God’s will, as he does and as do all the other Angels in heaven
St. Michael was the protector and defender of God’s chosen people. Now he is the defender of the Church and of all the Faithful, whom he defends against the constant assaults of the devil.
CONGRATULATIONS

About the Ukrainian Catholic Church
It is in full communion with the Holy See, the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church in Vatican City. It is the largest Eastern Catholic church in communion with the Roman Catholic Church, with more than 5 million members worldwide.
It has its own hierarchy (bishops, cardinal) that are subject to the leadership of the pope of the Roman Catholic Church.
During the Great Schism of 1054, Pope Leo XI of Rome and Patriarch Michael of Constantinople excommunicated each other. The Ukrainian Church became separated from the Holy See. However, the Union of Brest in 1596 brought Ukrainian Catholics back in full union with Roman Catholics. The Ukrainian Church was allowed to keep its customs and was given full autonomy within the Eastern rite.

This article was in the Citizen’s Voice this past week: If you did not see the article – this is for you to read. It is very interesting how our Churches are all in the same situation.
At 8 a.m. every Sunday, Mickey Kmietowicz of Glen Lyon unlocks the doors to St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, nestled at the base of a mountain at the entrance of the Glen Lyon section of Newport Township.
Parishioners begin to trickle in and soon the pastor, the Rev. John Seniw, arrives following a drive from Berwick where he also serves as pastor of SS. Cyril and Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church.
By 8:30, Kmietowicz has lighted the candles and some 45 parishioners celebrate the Divine Liturgy. A choir of four people sings a cappella. As per Ukrainian tradition, there is no organ.
Within minutes of the service ending, the collection is tallied in the church hall. The pastor meets briefly with a few parishioners. By 10, the church is closed and it will remain closed until the following Sunday, barring a church event or a funeral.
This is life in a small Eastern rite parish. These churches remain viable and even vibrant with diminished numbers because the faithful refuse to quit.
“The church has been our whole life. As we grew up, it was all based on that,” Kmietowicz said.
The Rev. Seniw lauded the deep devotion of his parishioners in Glen Lyon and Berwick. He said the depth of the faith exists despite the aging population.
There is another pivotal reason that the Ukrainian parishes survive: They have pastors and a plentiful supply of replacements ready to come to the United States from Ukraine as necessary.
“There are many vocations in Ukraine,” the priest said, despite the turmoil there as Russia seeks to take control of more of the country. “The archbishop (of the Ukrainian Metropolitan Archdiocese of Philadelphia) brings priests here from Ukraine. He actually has to turn guys down.”
The priest is a native of Erie. After attending two seminaries, he was ordained in 1982 in Philadelphia by then Metropolitan Stephen Sulyk. The Rev. Seniw served in parishes in Ohio and New Jersey and became pastor of the two local churches 11 years ago. He maintains his residence in Berwick.
The Rev. Seniw is dean of the North Anthracite Deanery of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia. Ukrainian churches in Nanticoke, Plymouth, Edwardsville, Wilkes-Barre and other regional communities belong to the deanery and they too share pastors. The Rev. Volodomyr Popyk is pastor of the Ukrainian churches in Nanticoke and Plymouth and is a native of the Ukraine.Continued: Ironically, St. Nicholas in Glen Lyon shared pastors for much of its early history. The parish was founded in 1894 and shared pastors with other parishes until 1948 when the Rev. Bohdan Olesh was named first resident pastor. He was at St. Nicholas when he died in December 1998.
When the parish celebrated its 60th anniversary in 1954, there were “276 souls” in the parish, a commemorative booklet notes. Today, there are 63 families registered, but a widow or widower living alone counts as a family, the Rev. Seniw said, so the actual number of parishioners is small. He did not have the figure.
Some things are downsized, such as the Liturgy schedule. A monthly bulletin replaces the usual weekly bulletin, but events are vigorously pursued to help maintain the parish.
A hoagie sale was held early in September and more than 500 hoagies were sold at $5 each. Soup and halushki sales are held each Lent and Advent season.
“The heating bill is our largest expense,” Kmietowicz said. The food sales also pay other utility bills.
Palmira Miller, a parishioner and one of four sisters who attend St. Nicholas, said parishioners do the cleaning. “We all chip in,” she said. Men also work around the church and grounds.
Holidays mean sharing the pastor also, so Easter morning service is at 6:30 in Glen Lyon. The priest then heads to Berwick for a 9 a.m. Liturgy.
Karen Phair of Nanticoke, choir director, recalled the days when 30-plus voices sang in the Glen Lyon church. The four current members learned the chants as youngsters, she said, as did their predecessors.
The original church burned down in 1936 and the existing church was built on the same site. The parish also has a cemetery in Newport Township and parishioners handle the caretaking there also.
There were a few young families present for a recent 8:30 service. Asked how long the church could remain open, the Rev. Seniw said no one can predict, but when viability ends consolidations will occur as necessary.
For now, St. Nicholas and its sister churches meet the challenges day by day, their members praying to maintain traditions and their parishes.

St. Thomas the Apostle
October 6th
Thomas the Apostle (called Didymus which means “the twin”) was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ, according to the New Testament. He is informally called doubting Thomas because he doubted Jesus’ resurrection when first told, (in the Gospel of John), followed later by his confession of faith, “My Lord and my God”, on seeing Jesus’ wounded body.
Traditionally, he is said to have travelled outside the Roman Empire to preach the Gospel, travelling as far as India. According to tradition, the Apostle reached Muziris, India in AD 52 and baptized several people, founding what today are known as Saint Thomas Christians or Nasranis. After his death, the reputed relics of Saint Thomas the Apostle were enshrined as far as Mesopotamia in the 3rd century, and later moved to various places. In 1258, some of the relics were brought to Abruzzo in Ortona, Italy, where they have been held in the Church of Saint Thomas the Apostle. He is often regarded as the Patron Saint of India, and the name Thoma remains quite popular among Saint Thomas Christians of India.
