MARK YOUR CALENDAR: The weekend of November 12/13th Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday, November 12th at 4:00 PM only. There will not be a Divine Liturgy on Sunday, November 13th. Because of the His Beatitude, Kyr Sviatoslav Shevchuk visit to the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Philadelphia.

During our Liturgy we must pray, 1.With devotion; 2.With humility; 3.With confidence; 4.With resignation to the will of God; and 5.With perseverance.

In the Eastern Christian Churches, prayer is the key to metanoia, through which we become deified. Prayer is more than just attending liturgical celebrations and receiving the sacramental Mysteries, whether on occasion or as a constant practice. Prayer must begin in the home – the domestic Church – and must be carried out in practice in the outside world, including Church, the workplace, the school and every other area of life. Without prayer in the home, every other action, even “religious”, is futile. Prayer requires discipline – the choice to pray with the same, or greater, fervor that one exercises in fulfilling other duties. It also requires true and sincere effort, coming from the heart, and not just from rote recitation. Prayer is conversation with God, and through this conversing, the individual comes to mystically know God, through Jesus Christ, as his Lord.

SANCTUARY LIGHT: The week of October 15 – 22 is requested by Paul & Marion Rose & Nancy Palumbo in memory of the Rose & Fromel Parents.

Sunday, Sept. 24 FIFTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
8:30AM God’s Blessing and Good Health on all parishioners

Please welcome to our Parish Father Paul Makar, who is the
Director of Vocations for the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadephia. Father Paul is our newest priest, and has been ordained a priest for our Archeparchy for over 1 year. During this time, he has been traveling to different parishes to preach on the importance of vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

THE CROSS

The Mystery of the Cross-is the Mystery of Mysteries. How can the Source of Life die, the Maker of all be annihilated and exclaim, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” This is the kenosis of the Son of God, who emptied Himself, took the form of a servant and became obedient unto death, even to the death of the Cross. The human mind, which is accustomed to asking why, is completely lost. The Mystery of the Cross-is the Mystery of Atonement and wonder: “Let every creature remain silent and adore.” For the message of the Cross is complete absurdity for those who are heading to ruin, but to those who are experiencing salvation, it is the Power of God.” (1 Cor. 1:18). If we ask why, the only answer we receive is that of St. John, “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that whoever believes in Him may not perish, but have eternal life.” (Jn. 3:16). Up until the sixth century, Christians were forbidden to depict Christ on the Cross, because the Cross was the punish¬ment of slaves. The first time it appeared was through some Syrian monks living in Narbonne, France, and from whence it spread.
No one is exempt from the cross; not even the Blessed Virgin, who carried her cross from Christ’s birth in Bethlehem to Golgotha, where she stood at her Son’s side, as He hung on the Cross. The closer we are to Christ, the heavier is our cross for, as St. Paul says, “Those whom He foreknew, He predestined to share the Image of His Son, so that the Son might be the first-born of many brothers.” (Rom. 8:29
Bows and Blessings: We bow and make the sign of the cross many times during the Liturgy as a sign of our faith and the receiving and accepting of God’s blessings. As a rule, we bow slightly and bless ourselves every time we mention the persons of the Trinity by name or the priest blesses the congregation. We also bow and sign ourselves whenever we enter or leave the church.
